In this anarchic novel of fragmented, symbolic narratives of India's outcasts, there is the idea of a truly great work of art for the 21st Century, an equivalent of anarchist sociologist Rebecca Solnit's vision of "A Paradise Built in Hell." There are times, especially toward the end of the book, where the narrative itself gains the immediacy and power of its ambitions. There's a taut account of violence, terrorism, and love in the insurgency in Kashmir and a poetic canvass of a community living in a Delhi graveyard, where society's outcasts build a New Jerusalem.Unfortunately, for me and apparently for a good many other readers as well, a lot of the book sags. It feels as if Arundhati Roy does not quite have her heart in it or believe her own idea, and that hollows out some of the writing. (There's even one section where one of the characters, Tilo, with more than a faint resemblance to Roy, speculates on writing a bad novel: she may have sensed that it was not going well.) If this book had arrived at a publisher's from an unknown writer, it either would not have been published or would have been massively edited. The former would have been sad; the latter might have saved it. Meanwhile, for the American reader, there is a lot of vivid and informative writing about India and much of today's world. For some, it would be more accessible in Roy's non-fiction such as "Capitalism: A Ghost Story."

I expected to love this book. I loved “God of Small Things” and several of my all-time favourite books are by Indian authors. So after approaching it full of anticipation and expectations, it pains me to say that I found it almost unreadable. Which is feel sure is more about me and my failure as a literary reader. But I did not “get” it.The book is about a disjointed trio on the margins of society, people who have no people, who come together and make a new home in a Delhi graveyard. Anjum is a hermaphrodite who considers herself a “counterfeit woman” and who longs to be a mother. Saddam Hussein hero-worships the dictator Saddam Hussein and has renamed himself in his honor. And Tilo’s great love is a Kashmiri terrorist. It’s an extremely disjointed novel, more like a collection of barely related stories that move backwards and forwards in time, which gradually weave themselves together to allow you to spot the common threads. Along the way we are introduced to dozens of characters and for almost every one we will be given their back story in detail, whether it is relevant or not. There is a lot of telling us “what happened” and not a lot of dialogue.Essentially this is a book without a plot and if you realise that going in, you’ll probably struggle less with it than I did. The writing is lovely: scenes are described in such a way that you’re there, you see what the characters are seeing. Even characters who make only a brief appearance are brought vividly to life. The instability in Kashmir and its effect on the people who live there is chillingly portrayed – when an ear infection means you could get shot because you can’t hear the instructions from the checkpoints.I finished it and I feel a sense of accomplishment for doing so, but would I recommend it? No not really.

I loved The God of Small Things, Arundhati Roy's first novel, and I fully expected to love this one, her second, that was written twenty years after the first. I was disappointed to realize that I didn't.It was not because the writing was not beautiful. Of course it was beautiful. Roy's prose is poetic and musical. It flows, one sentence leading with the inevitably of rushing water into the next.It was not because there were no sympathetic characters. Indeed, the pages are filled with so many sympathetic characters that at times it is hard to focus.Every single one of these sympathetic characters is at the center of a tragic story. There is so much unrelenting tragedy in this book that I began to feel overwhelmed and oppressed by it. And I think my main problem with the book is related to that. The overarching tragedy here that touches every character's life and becomes the theme of some of them is Kashmir. Bleeding Kashmir. That bit of territory that Pakistan and India have fought over virtually continuously since partition. The appalling atrocities suffered by all sides in the conflict - Sikhs, Muslims, Hindus - pile up unendingly. Most of the action of Roy's novel takes place after 1984, after the assassination of Indira Gandhi by her Sikh bodyguards and the resulting violence that wracked the country afterward. She tells her story primarily through the lives of two characters. The first is Anjum, born Aftab. At birth, the child was a true hermaphrodite, with both male and female sex organs. Raised by her family as a boy, she nevertheless always identified as female and when she had the opportunity to leave home, she became a part of a thriving transgender community in Delhi. The second primary character is Tilo, a former architecture student. In college, she was a part of a group of four friends who continue to be connected in later life. One of them, Musa, was her sometime lover, a Kashmiri freedom fighter. She later marries another of the friends but continues to travel to Kashmir to visit Musa, who is in constant danger and must live his life on the run.If the story had maintained the focus on these two lives, I would have found it easier to follow and to empathize with, but the introduction of so many minor characters kept leading me on unwanted detours away from the two heroines of the tale and at times - particularly in the middle of the book - I felt that there was no glue holding it all together and it threatened to fly off into its constituent parts. In describing one of her characters who kept notes, diaries, and memos, Roy wrote:"She wrote strange things down. She collected scraps of stories and inexplicable memorabilia that appeared to have no purpose. There seemed to be no pattern or theme to her interest."That would almost serve as a description of her book. The strongest part of the book for me was the ending where the writer did manage to bring her various "scraps of stories" together into a well-orchestrated and even hopeful conclusion. It was an ending worth waiting for.

This was a sluggish, aimless, and overly ambitious "novel." It seemed to strive toward social and religious commentary, myth, fairy tell, folk lore, fantasy, and novel. The writing was good. Roy knows how to write. She knows how to tell a story. She is very ambitious here. The is a structureless novel, although I would not go as far as to say it is character driven. Characters move around in the ether untethered, popping up here, there. I could not finish this novel, I got about 65% through. I started and stopped about four times, considering what this work was all about. I just could not get interested in the characters and could not gather up the story. I did my darnedest after a month, and now I am setting it aside.

Okay, there are a number of really cute projects in this book! I have altered the design on the crochet/needle case to suit myself as I have a large collection of vintage and antique crochet hooks--will add a photo when I am done...about 1/2 way there now! The kids booties are adorable! There are many really nice ideas in here that are much like the older patterns that we see from say the late 1800s-1900s in US....very dainty, lacey and feminine style. I AM NOT saying outdated....this is not by any means. I do think the cover shot could have been better since those little jars looks all crooked and weird that way....perhaps something showing the needle case or the scissor case or even the cover for the basket would have been a bit nicer...but still it's not an expensive book and it is WORTH whatever you pay for it. The actual stitch patterns are not anything new...its only how they were used that truly made this book special.

I'll make this review as concise as possible.Pros:1. Nicely laid out with actual pictures of the patterns/projects you will be making.2. Super cute patterns3. Step-by-step directions and illustrations/photos to help you with each projectCons:1. Charts only, no written instructions2. Tutorial pictures are very small3. The terminology used in the book is confusing4. You can probably find these patterns online with clearly written instructionsIf you can read charts and like very cute, lacey crochet projects, this book is for you. As for me, I will be returning it promptly.

I can't even remember when I learned to crochet, I was that young, but in my teens my Norwegian Grandmother taught me to make granny squares and flat circles and sent me out into the world prepared to make anything I saw and liked without ever consulting a pattern. My Swedish Grandmother then gave me an old book she had on crocheted edgings for handkerchiefs. I enjoyed looking at the pictures but that tiny steel hook was daunting.I saw my first crochet chart in this book and realized that I was a visual learner - as another reviewer pointed out, with a chart you can cut to the chase and get the project started. I worked my way through Pattern Lessons 1 and 2, then made a number of projects as small gifts, and finally poached many of the techniques in other projects to, aha, make anything I saw and liked, only smaller.I agree that the lack of guidance regarding thread size or any sort of gauge is a pretty serious flaw here. I can only assume that the term "lace thread" refers to size 10 mercerized cotton most of the time but I see what looks like size 5 perle cotton on a few items. ....sigh...Still and all, there is some fun stuff in here and I may just go back and make something from it. Looking at it again inspires me, and isn't that the point of this sort of book?

Like the title says, it's "lacy" crochet - all thread, all girly, very feminine stuff. It's focused on household items like a sewing case, doilies, basket ribbons, and sachets ... to name a few. I can see how many people would find it to be "fluff" but I absolutely love this book. It's eye candy with beautiful full-color pictures, and it's useful because it shows both the graphs (c'mon, crochet graphs are so much more helpful than wording that changes from one continent to the next) as well as US instructions. The beginning of the book even starts with detailed, beautifully photographed instructions on some crochet techniques. Overall, I haven't a bad thing to say about the book - it's girly, it's beautiful, and there isn't a single project that I don't want to play with.

I bought this off of amazon because the patterns look really cute...and they are. HOwever, I must say that if you are a beginner this is not the book for you. First, they do not tell you what size crochet thread to use, or even what type of material. The book will simply say something like " Lace Thread, Light Blue, 0.1oz (3g)". This really does not mean a lot to me. I am used to reading patterns that say something like "100 yds, size 10, 100% cotton crochet thread". It is even more helpful when books tell you what brand they use, but once again this book does not list this. So, this poses the first challenge. Second there is no gauge. They do let you know what the finished measurement will be, so basically you will have to crochet the whole thing to find out if you are using the right size hook or not. That is a real bummer, and will probably mean a lot of wasted time. Lastly, the patterns are not written like traditional patterns. Traditional crochet patterns will go row by row, with everything abbreviated. These patterns basically break down the pattern into about 3-6 steps, giving you a general overview of the pattern, with you having to go by the chart to actually complete the pattern. If you are not used to crocheting by a chart this might be difficult for you. I feel if they are going to publish a Japanese book in English, they should take the time to go the whole way, and write it in a more traditionally English way. I will say though that the patterns are really cute. Some of the patterns I would like to make that look especially cute to me are: circle coaster, pot holder, tissue box cover, jar covers, round doily, square doily, and the lace basket. I will also note, that the pictures are excellant. I love full color photos, because looking at them gives me inspiration for crochet projects. Something really positive about this book though, is that if you are looking to get into crocheting from Japanese books from Japan, using this as a starting point to see if you can crochet directly from a chart is a good way to go.

Great projects

Everything in this book is adorable and whimsical. I have made the pot holder and the crochet basket. The crochet basket is very practical and beautiful. The pot holder is beautiful, and maybe not so practical. However it makes a beautiful decoration. The instructions are well written and the objects are easy to make. I want to make everything in this book!

Forty years ago a concerned pastor, who had been intimidated by psychological counseling theories and therapies, boldly proclaimed that pastors, elders, and lay leaders were competent and better equipped to minister to their own people struggling with problems than professionals in the secular therapeutic realm. Dr. Jay Adams laid out his claim in the book Competent to Counsel. Dr. Adams is a counselor, writer, pastor, and the founder of the Institute for Nouthetic Studies. Competent to Counsel, written in 1970, is his most well-known book, though by no means his only work on the subject of Nouthetic counseling. His own failure at counseling one of his church attendees led him to seek to be a better and more effective counselor to those who seek him out as pastor. It didn’t take long for him to realize that modern psychoanalysis and counseling techniques as taught in the secular world did not offer much relief or assistance to the hurting either. Life altering experiences such as teaching practical theology and Westminster Theological Seminary, working with Christian psychologist O. Hobart Mower at two state mental institutions in Illinois, and his own personal in-depth study of Scripture all led Adams to the realization that “all concepts, terms and methods used in counseling need to be re-examined biblically” (xviii), which is exactly what he set out to do in his first work, Competent to Counsel. In Competent to Counsel Adams explains that practices of modern psychoanalysis are self-defeating because they are based on the assumption that man can heal himself, right his own wrongs, and change his own behaviors. However, the Bible teaches the believer than man is depraved and sinful from birth and has no means within himself to change this fact. Therefore, Adam argues, that apart from the work of the Holy Spirit counseling, convicting, and renewing a person, man has no hope of escape from his problems, hence the need for nouthetic counseling. Nouthetic counseling is biblical counseling. It sees the Bible as its main resource or guide to overcoming the source of mankind’s problems – sin. God has revealed truth to man’s nature, need, and salvation within its pages. Nouthetic counseling also relies on the fact that true, life-changing, healing, counseling must be done by the Holy Spirit, that no man can change himself or another. While a pastor or counselor guides, admonishes, teaches, or rebukes another according to the truths of the Scripture, only the Holy Spirit can affect any true lasting change. Adams also challenges the indoctrination of our culture that believes that only those properly trained in psychological disciplines are capable of counseling those with severe problems. They claim that only psychology has the answers to man’s problems. This humanistic philosophy has been proven wrong in the fact that the world and man have not gotten better since the advent of psychology, but in fact has gotten worse. Adams demonstrates through various illustrations and through Scriptural support that “the work of counseling should be carried on preeminently by minister and other Christians whose gifts, training and calling especially qualify and require them to pursue the work” (268). He lists what these gifts and training encompass as well as suggesting methods as to how they may put their calling into action within the counseling process. Realizing that this book was published before the existence of scientific data to support his claims, I believe Adams was a man of God who boldly took a step into a relatively ignored part of the pastor’s calling – the area of pastoral counseling from a biblical foundation. While definitely not a new idea, since the advent of psychoanalysis, the role of pastor as counselor had been relegated to the back burner. I applaud Adams for having the courage to sound the wake-up call to Christian ministers everywhere. This book is insightful, thought provoking and convicting. Pastors need to realize that part of their calling is to walk beside the sheep, protect them, correct them, teach them, and guide them into all truth through the application of the Bible in everyday life. It is the calling and the privilege of the pastor to shepherd the flock and not abdicate his or her role to the wolves waiting outside the gate. Jay Adams, in Competent to Counsel, has shepherded the shepherds in the area of biblical counseling and their personal responsibilities to their flock.

This text is well written and laid out in a great fashion to use for teaching, study and personal application. I cherish the wisdom with which Dr. Adams has so skillfully given us this treatise on the ability of believer's to help others by counseling from God's Word, along with the Holy Spirit's guidance and compassionate love. Each chapter clearly illustrated how we can apply scriptural principles to the hearts of those in need. Soul-care is the bottom line. Understanding God's design and purpose for all people, and how to allow God to flourish within our hearts is what this counseling is all about. There is some humor as well. This classic text, written in the 1970s, before the age of PC's and the various difficulties that have accompanied the past 45+ years of life, cause some of the illustrations to be humorous -- from another place and time. Man's problems have evolved in form but not in origin, it all goes back to the heart and what is found there. Jay Adams gives us a systematic look at sin within and how it affects the souls on men and women and how we can become free to experience God's original intent and purpose for us as His beautiful creations.A needful text in the church today to teach us how to recapture the biblical counsel people need that results in bringing people from bondage into true and lasting freedom. Those who desire to serve God with hope and joy in the midst of a very broken world will find this refreshing and powerful.

This book is not well organized and does not give great supports for it's arguments. It is true to the subtitle "an introduction..." because the book truly only grazes the surface and does not expound well on the concepts, which I guess is great if you want to by the follow-up book... "The Chrisitian Counselor's Guide..." It is simply too long and wordy, especially in the later chapters, to contain so little information. Many of the concepts are good and could be substantive if only they were organized and substantive. It's like a rough draft and the follow-up book is the finished product.I've read many review singing praises of this book. But as a professional, a student and educator, this book just does not hold up. The follow-up book is much better organized and the concepts are better explained... whether you agree with them or not. It is a much better read and will give you a clearer, organized understanding of what the author calls "Nouthetic Counseling"

Jay's book provides a perspective written during the early days of the nouthetic counseling movement. His optimism concerning the nouthetic model is evident and reflects the viewpoint of one who feels he has found the cure of a fatal disease. In this case he views the disease as the weakness of secular counseling models on the one hand and soft/ineffective Christian counseling on the other. The last forty plus years have tested his thesis clarifying some of its strengths and defining some of its weaknesses. Nouthetic counseling in a Christian context can be helpful if it is accomplished with balance and wisdom. It cannot stand alone. Parakaletic counseling, taking on the pain and suffering of another to enable healing, must also be part of the Christian counseling formula to balance the confrontational mode of the nouthetic model. Together the two elements complement each other providing the counselee with love and support and the challenge to radically change behavior. Jay writes clearly enough for the non professional, and includes many examples of real counseling experiences in support of his thesis. As noted the weak point of that thesis is that is incomplete by itself and fails to include the parakaletic aspect.
