A revisit to the perpetrators and survivors of the Rwandan genocide in one particular district. Deeply absorbing and elucidating. You will emerge with great appreciation for human resilience and the thoughtfulness and introspective capacity of individual, ordinary Rwandans.

Jean Hatzfeld has accomplished a difficult and very touching triology on the Rwandan genocide, which reveals the perspectives of both the victims and the killers and the painful experience of living together again. Much recommended to anyone interested in the past and the future of Rwanda.

I loved the book. Yet - it's hard to rate a product like that. All three books by Jean Hatzfeld (this one is the third out of trilogy) are amazing, all three should be read.

This can be very infuriating as you read through if you care about our common humanity and can't stand injustice!

The first reviewer said things very well, so I will leave that as it is. But I live in Rwanda and am married to a Rwandan and I work here among many who were here and others who returned afterward. I find Hatzfield's book refreshing because it is so honest, and honesty about these events is difficult, not because Rwandans aren't truthful but because we all have to live next to one another, come what may. As some survivors point out, it would help them to release all their pent-up feelings, but it would be hard to continue our daily lives if they did so. So for national survival, they sacrifice, even again. Rwanda is truly an astounding story of survival against all odds: not one of the people I know who was here in the two or three years afterward really believed the country would find any way forward. The fact that it has and has even surpassed many of the conditions of its pre-war status and is looking forward to the future is an incredible testimony to Rwandans themselves. The people in this book are witness to that: this is as true a snapshot of rural Rwanda as can be found in English. Life in the city is a bit more complex than Hatzfield paints it, but he knows this particular community very well.

That there is only one other review to date on Amazon indicates a low readership for The Antelope's Strategy. It's true that more pressing current affairs require our attention between Iraq, Afghanistan, the worldwide financial situation...and this doesn't even include the growing drug trade in Mexico nor the uranium enrichment in North Korea. However, the genocide in Rwanda still strikes me as one of the more important historical events in my lifetime as it reveals the continuing need for discourse on how and why ethnicity is manipulated in politics as well as the longterm effects of such politics. In this accessible book which combines direct oral narrative with the author's literary shaping of events, the story post-genocide is told both by Tutsis and Hutus. In 2003, the mostly Tutsi government freed the Hutu prisoners who admitted their crimes in killing Tutsis. The freed Hutus were taught how to behave towards the survivor Tutsis and allowed to return home, to the silent shock of the survivor Tutsis who in turn were urged by the government to behave judiciously and neighborly towards the freed Hutus, even towards those who took part in killing their families and friends. With only a traditional and almost informal court (the gacaca) in which to air grievances and seek out further truths concerning that summer when a possible 75% of the Tutsi population was decimated, both Tutsis and Hutus face an uneasy coexistence but recognize the compromise as the only way for the nation to move forward. In reading the book, I was stunned by the details about the daily existence during that genocide when Tutsis and Hutus engaged in a deadly hunting game with its own perimeters of hunting time and almost safe hours when Tutsis could emerge from the forest or the papaya marshes to forage for food. I had read about the churches where the massacres seemed straight forward. But within the forest and the marshes was an odder game, one with the slimmest chance of survivor for the Tutsis. Of the six thousand fled to Kayumba Forest, only twenty survived the daily ritual of running to evade the hunter Hutus who, armed with machetes, entered the forest each morning, then took a break for lunch, then returned to murder before finishing the day at five. The survivors from the papaya marshes tell a similar story: daily hiding in the water among vegetation during the daytime, then coming out in the evening as the Hutu hunters ate to forage for food. The goal for the Tutsis daily was to survive until mealtime. Here is massacre as a workday with the Hutus considering murders just another part of the job. That the Tutsis and Hutus even manage to get on with life, after all that has happened and the crimes that have been committed, is quite something.

Surprising, comforting and appalling all at once. More personal thoughts by Hatzfeld than in his other books. It answered so many questions from Hatzfeld's first two books on Rwanda. He puts the killers and survivors side-by-side as they now live in their villages and makes the reader really feel what it must be like to be there.

I thought this was fiction. It's not. Interviews with survivors and perpetrators. Not fun.

Great read, even if you aren't planning on using the information immediately. If your idea of "camping" is the Hilton, then this book is not for you. This book was first published in 1920, by a man who knew the woodsmen that lived the life, during his lifetime. The author, an experienced woodsman, or woodcrafter, interjects a more than a few personal antidotes throughout the book. It is well written and illustrated, even though at times, finding the correct figure and illustration can be a little frustrating to some.Historically fascinating, as he comments on his talks with actual Civil War Veterans, and the wild men of the west. A lost art of actual surviving with what you have on your back...quite literally. I had to remind myself that when the author mentions "that back in the 60's" ...really meant, back in the 1860's, not the 1960's!The book is actual a precursor to one of the first U.S.B.S. scouting books. It has a very "scouting" feel to it. From building "cooking" fires to "warming" camp fires, shelters, and how to load-up packing horses. You will find the book entertaining to say the least, if not for the historical aspect. The writing style reflects language of the 1920's, both in context references and humor.I really enjoyed reading this and it's a good book to start on, for those interested in getting back to their frontiersman-like roots. This book will take you to a place before the industrial era. It's more of a starters guide and fairly basic. It will tell you the basics of gutting an animal, but not on how to hunt, trap or forage. There are more detailed books on these matters. It will tell you basics on shelter types, wood types, basic camp knots and such, and the author assumes you have a bit of common sense. He tells you of camp etiquette, where and how to set up a camp and breaking down camp. There is also Native American philosophy peppered throughout the book that reminds us that we are only here for a short period of time. This would make a great gift for the young adventurer in your family, or any adult that appreciates the wisdom and art of camping.

I recently discovered Daniel Beard's "Shelters, Shacks, and Shanties" Shelters, Shacks, and Shanties: The Classic Guide to Building Wilderness Shelters (Dover Books on Architecture) and really enjoyed the ideas, illustrations, and personality of the book. My family and I take camping trips regularly and I have tried to provide many opportunities for them to enjoy and appreciate the outdoors. This particular book by Beard offers even more fun ideas such as various ways to start fires, building camp kitchens, choosing a tent site, and the final chapters close with traditional Native American lore/customs concerning council grounds and fires. Beard references people and stories all along the way who he has learned from and have offered advice as well. The book was originally published in 1920 and it certainly provides insight into a time long gone by. The information and ideas concerning camping and woodcraft is provided in such a way that it's almost like sitting on the front porch with your grandfather and he's passing down the wisdom of the old timers. One of my favorite chapters in the book is the one concerning "Camp Food". There are some very interesting sections in this chapter concerning beaver tail soup and muskrat. He actually offers a good idea of improvising a Dutch Oven with two cast iron frying pans. Simple...yet I never thought of that. There are some chapters concerning pack horses and dogs that I just kind of skimmed through but overall I found the book very interesting and as I said about "Shelters, Shacks, and Shanties", I wish these books could of dropped in my hands when I was a kid. I plan on taking both of these books with me on our next camping trip that is fast approaching. My son and I have already picked out a few things to try out, such as using one of Beard's methods on how to lay a good cooking fire. I've also read aloud to him (he's 6 years old) Beard's advice on how to prepare for a camping trip and have begun putting together a small pack for him to take. It's been a lot of fun and surely builds up the anticipation and excitement for journeying out in the great outdoors. I'll make sure this book makes it to his hands! It's a great book by one of the founders of the Boy Scouts. I was at the used book store the other day and found a 1929 Boy Scouts handbook (revised edition - 9th printing) and it has Beard listed as the National Scout Commissioner and a member of the Executive Board. You can definitely see Beard's influences in that handbook as well. Anyway, highly enjoyed the book and I do recommend this, as well as, "Shelters, Shacks, and Shanties".

this book in its original form had great information, This edition is very poorly copied and translated from its original text (via computer download ) the chapters are a mish mash .. the paragraphs are poorly edited buy the "publisher",..and I am not sure how long the binding will last ...My copy even has the Library stamps it was "borrowed" from on the scanned in pages ......

This classic from Dan Beard stands the test of time. While technology, culture, and tastes may change, the wilderness does not. His insights and wild wood ethos give me the urge to get back to camp. I felt like I was sitting by the fire with a mug of coffee listening to Dan tell tales and impart his wisdom. It's at once practical and nostalgic. Modern wilderness explorers may discount Dan's "outdated" wisdom but for those who can open their minds and take it all in there is a great feeling of connection with those who have walked the trails before them.

There are newer versions of this title that omit the casually racist comments. I believe this is one of them, though it was a gift for my granddaughter who thinks camping is normal, not houses. A good book for young adventurers, though they will need adult supervision with several of the projects because the tools and woods may not be handy to a modern back yard.

Almost nostalgic, this is a long-ago guide that still applies, mostly. Better materials are now available, but the principles still apply. A good, basic reference that I'm glad I now have.

Reads well for a publication that was written over a 100 years ago. Illustrations are a little hard to decipher. Crammed. Worth the price. Would not pay any more. !/2 way through, and learning.

Great book! Useful tips! entertaining reading....highly recommend...

I purchased this book upon the recommendation that a fellow passenger offered during a recent plane ride. This person described it as a spot-on analysis of America's economic woes and a great guide as to the solutions that we can put into practice. However, as I read the book myself, I discovered that this passenger had been dead wrong in his description of the book.Mr. Lipscomb can preach all he wants--and he does so again and again throughout the book--that, regardless of our race, sex, religious beliefs or political leanings, we must follow his lead to save the US economy by taking action to preserve and restore manufacturing jobs in America. Yet, his analysis of how we arrived at our current situation lays the blame squarely at the feet of the usual suspects from the political Left's perspective. "Wal-Mart and other companies of its ilk" are heavily impugned throughout, and Mr. Lipscomb even stoops to the level of reporting heresay without backing: "Wal-Mart employees are afraid to speak out publicly for fear of retribution, (but) behind closed doors they say that they do not make enough money to either support their families or pay for Wal-Mart's expensive health care." Mr. Lipscombe implores us to write to Congress and demand that our anti-Wal-Mart voices be heard. He warns that it'll be tough, given the large amount of money that Wal-Mart has in buying influence in Washington, D.C. But he exhorts us to "lock arms with (him) and take the fight (against Wal-Mart) to Washington." So, that's the answer, eh? Drive Wal-Mart out of business and the US economy will be saved?Nowhere are the political Left's sacred cows ever mentioned as possible causes of the decline of US manufacturing. Labor unions (which have detrimentally inflated wages and benefits for unskilled and semi-skilled American labor) are not mentioned at all--and in fact Mr. Lipscomb even goes as far as to declare that high American wages are not the problem, that Americans can still enjoy higher wages as long as we push for "a worldwide minimum wage, one that is likely well below the USA standard today, but ensures some level of basic living standard in other countries." Sorry to rain on your party, Mr. Lipscomb, but the equivalent of two US dollars a day does equate to better than basic living standards in much of the world. Indeed, the notion of a "worldwide minimum wage" and tying US living standards to those of nations around the world is pure misguided fantasy, and not worth the paper upon which it is printed--and definitely not the $17.99 that I paid for this book! Mentioned nowhere in the book is the exorbitantly high corporate tax rate in the US. Somewhat mentioned are the too-strict federal government regulations and restrictions on businesses that attempt to manufacture in the US, but Mr. Lipscomb frames this in the context that we must demand that the rest of the world adopt our standards and restrictions "to level the playing field." Again, not likely. The entire book seems to be based upon his distaste for Wal-Mart, coupled with his wish that the rest of the world become more like the US, despite that he himself states in the book that nobody wants to become like us because we are in what he describes as such steep economic decline. Quite a dilemma you've created for yourself, eh Mr. Lipscomb? I suppose he believes that all other nations should strive to become just like the US--minus the existence of Wal-Mart.And, if there were still any lingering doubt as to Mr. Lipscomb's political leanings, his section regarding "What the Federal Government Can Do" cinches it. Rather than suggesting lowering corporate taxes or implementing tax credits for manufacturing in the US, or the relaxing or removing of various regulations and restrictions that prevent US manufacturing from being practical, Mr. Lipscomb instead recommends that "the federal government could convene a nation-wide 90-day Internet and live town hall brainstorming session where every citizen from every walk of life could contribute ideas for turning this situation around." Meaningless pandering, in the true fashion of the political Left, and the perfect forum for Wal-Mart haters everywhere to unite!

This book is an excellent read which opens peoples eyes to the problems we have in our country which is the trade and energy balance and shows people the way us consumers can make a difference and create jobs by supporting American Made Products. This book changed my life cause before I read it I was frustrated about how much debt we have thanks to the trade imbalance and upset that Walmart and others who import a lot of junk from China were putting people out of work and putting us into more debt and I felt like there was nothing I could do about it but after reading the book I felt empowered and real patriotic because now I know I can make a difference with my buying power by supporting only the companies that make stuff in the USA which will make our economy stronger. Free trade is a lie and the only thing that's free about it is all the free money we give to China and I say free cause its not like we get anything valuable in return. All we get is a bunch of poorly made garbage. It's like China thinks we are one big garbage can where they can dump all their crap on.To people who are parents I say if your son or daughter told you they wanted to work in a place where the air and water was polluted and there was no worker or safety laws and the pay was very low and freedom of expression was forbidden would you let them work there? If the answer is no then remember that China uses Child labor so next time you are thinking about buying something from China think if I wouldn't allow my kid or daughter to work under those conditions then I shouldn't support a country that does allow that with my money. .I am glad I read this book cause this book showed me I can make a difference every time I go to make a purchase and make real lasting change in our country so all in all it was a very good read!

I just put this down after only 30 pages or so and I don't think I'll pick it up again. The constant references to the author's online store that specializes in made in the USA products is just too distracting. More than distracting... Its annoying. This thing feels like its sole purpose is to drive traffic to his site. I suspect some of the positive reviewers are paid shills.

This book is very true. We (all of us) need to do something to keep the US working class from losing their jobs. The only problem is that the goods made in the US will cost more because the workers here are treated correctly. So that costs the consumer. Most people do not want to pay a higher price for their goods, and will buy things made in China. Actually, it's very difficult to find anything made in the the US. It's not only Walmart, it's all the stores including Dillards, Macy's etc. It's all a question of greed. Even the food chain is a mess. I like to eat fish several times a week. It's getting hard to find fish that is processed in the US. Why would we buy cod that is fished in the US and processed in China? Soon it will be chicken, beef and vegetables!Wake up Americans. Our country's economy is failing because of a few greedy people making a mint who have the goods made in China for nothing and then sell them here for ten times more. This book is a wake up call. Kathy

I should have read the other reviews. Luckily, you are reading this... so move along. This is NOT "The Secret Garden". It is "A CONSIDERABLY ABRIDGED Cliff's Notes style childrens re-enactment of The Secret Garden". Nowhere in the description did it say that this was not the real book. It's like half an inch think written in 25 pt. font. My 10 year old daughter read it in less than an hour. Her last book.... Little Women. The real one. 800 pages. I promised her she would like this. Instead she just looked at me like..."really?". And I don't blame her. Seller should update the description.Sorry, but anyone else leaving a higher rating may simply not realize that they received a fraud.PROS: Very pretty cover. Hardback.CONS: See everything I wrote above.

People are naturally inclined to hand out the "instant classic" award to the books they like, but there are only a precious few books that can hold on to such a title for over a hundred years, (this was published in book form in 1911), and still stay fresh, engaging and appealing. This book is the source and template for so many children's lit conventions that it is hard to imagine a library without multiple copies. You can sample the book as a Kindle freebie or in some other downloadable form, since it's out of copyright and readily available. Then, and better yet, after you read it and discover its pleasures, look for a nice edition to give to each young reader you know. There are easy to read books that are shallow, and there are harder to read books with considerable depth, but this one manages to be accessible to a fairly young reader and yet still loaded with fine writing, style, character, mystery, romance, adventure and inspiration. An excellent choice. And while you're at it, take a look at Burnett's "Little Lord Fauntleroy". He's gotten a bad rap, (probably as a result of those Fauntleroy suits and haircuts that were the rage in the twenties), but he's actually smart , level headed, and shrewdly decent in unexpected ways. So go and get your Burnett on.

I am not really sure how I missed out on this book as a child so I decided to read it with my daughter. We thoroughly enjoyed the experience and zipped through it in just a few days. Frances Hodgson Burnett shares some amazing insights into human nature with the reader. My daughter exclaimed at one point, “How can Mary see that Colin is spoiled but not see that she was the same at first too?” Led to some great discussions for sure! I also thought it was amazing that Burnett at times switches between different third person limited perspectives and we even have some of the events in the garden narrated from the point of view of the robin! Such clever writing! Some reviewers complained about the fact that many of the characters speak with a Yorkshire accent and Frances Hodgson Burnett wrote it phonetically the way the characters pronounced the words. I thought it added to the fun! I tried to speak with the broad Yorkshire accent as I read it out loud and changed my voice for the different characters. My daughter and I both loved it. The Yorkshire dialect was interesting and we have been trying to throw some of the words we learned into conversation such as “wick” meaning alive or lively. From my point of view, that beats trying to throw something modern like “on fleek” into conversation!

I really enjoyed this book. The characters were very well developed. The story was interesting, it was difficult to put down the book. The writing style, the description of events... you name it.. everything is just perfect. Thus it deserves a 5 star rating. This was my first ever kindle in motion ebook and it was good enough not know what exactly to expect. Say 10-15 pictures with motion in a book with around 21 chapters and over 250 pages. There were very few pages with illustration in motion (not many) and others with sketches of flowers. There were branches on all corners of each page and i loved that as the story proceeds, those blanches are full of leaves and flowers.I enjoyed reading this book and I hope you do too. Please hit the like button if you found my review helpful. Thank you.

I never read this as a child, and I think I'm glad. Reading it now, as an over-60, garden-loving mom with lots of life experience, I think I appreciate it a lot more, although I would have loved the mystery as a kid. Now I can appreciate the serious racism, the sad child(ren) neglect, the rather pagan awakening to nature (clothed as "Magic"), and the joyous, if obvious, ending. I believe the writing was very good for its time, and had no problem with the Yorkshire dialect. Mary and Colin and Dickon all struck me as very believable characters, and the changes wrought in Mary and Colin were overall pretty credible, although they happened a bit too quickly. I had more of a problem with Archibald's rejection of his son for ten whole years. Dwelt just a bit much on the beauty and changeableness of the moors. Well worth reading.

The Puritans in America: A Narrative Anthology

Review

“By presenting Puritan sermons, reminiscences, poetry, and other writings in a chronological fashion, Heimert and Delbanco have captured the spirit of a vibrant New England, experiencing social, religious, and economic change. The editors’ brief introductions to many of the selections make this volume especially attractive to students of Puritan history and literature.”―Virginia Quarterly Review“This anthology pays tribute to Puritan trailblazers in political, religious and literary realms and casts them in a new and sparkling light. Lucid editorial notes and passages accompany the individual selections, the tone of which are at once friendly and scholarly.”―Susan Monsky, Boston Sunday Globe“What commends this particular book are its chronological organization, its insistence that any firm generalizations about Puritans may obscure the ‘human uncertainty’ of their lives in America, its treatment of the movement as sensibility rather than ideology, and its focus on emotionality in the context of the past. By defining Puritanism as an affective style and them allowing us to trace that style’s literary effusions over a century, Heimert and Delbanco invite us to investigate how communities organize their emotions and how time transfigures culturally prescribed feeling, a task well worth taking up. If the heart has its reason, it has its history too.”―Charles L. Cohen, Journal of the History of the Behavioral Sciences

Puritan history in America helps tell the story of the founding of this country. There were very many interesting, and influential New England Puritans of note to read about. Cotton Mather wrote a large history of New England, tracing the ecclesiastical history especially.

This is a great collection of primary sources such as speeches, sermons, etc. produced by the Puritan leadership during crucial moments in their society's development. The only unfortunate thing is that many of the sections are only excerpts--understandable since the book would be much, much bigger if the works were published word-for-word. Plus, nothing is prohibiting you, the reader, from seeking out the sources that grab your attention. Overall this is a terrific introduction to Puritan thought.
