From Booklist

Writers and artists are always asked about their process, including the crucial question, “How do you do meaningful creative work while also earning a living?” Currey set out to amass as much information as he could find about the routines “brilliant and successful” creators adopted and followed, and the result is a zestful survey of the working habits of “some of the greatest minds of the last four hundred years.” This zealous and judicious volume brims with quotes and fascinating disclosures about the vagaries of the creative life. Currey outs the habits of nearly 200 choreographers, comedians, composers, caricaturists, filmmakers, philosophers, playwrights, painters, poets, scientists, sculptors, and writers in a dizzying array that includes Benjamin Franklin, Henri Matisse, Nikola Tesla, Stephen King, Twyla Tharp, Federico Fellini, Ann Beattie, Gustav Mahler, and Toni Morrison. Here are early birds and night owls, the phenomenally rigorous and the nearly dysfunctional. George Balanchine thought things out while ironing. Maya Angelou writes sequestered in a “tiny, mean” hotel room. Marilynne Robinson confesses, “I really am incapable of discipline.” Currey’s compendium is elucidating and delectable. --Donna Seaman

As is described in the Introduction, the most interesting thing about the artists, thinkers and inventors included in this book is that they all have unique rituals that help them work. The majority of personalities are writers, but visual artists, composers and philosophers are also covered. I find it refreshing to read about how apparently "lazy" some of the artists are, while others are absolutely rigid with their routines. The only thing the book seems to be missing is pictures of the artists' work spaces. The space and tools with which an artist creates are also of interest and plays into the rituals that go along with the creative process. Much of this information could probably be gleaned from extensive digging on Wikipedia, but Currey does a good job of keeping things clipping along and you find yourself reading a few extra profiles of artists whose names you may not recognize. An enjoyable read and quite easy to pick up and put down.

So here's the takeaway:1. The people described in this book all work very hard and, frequently, VERY long hours.2. Regular, extended exercise - usually walking - is frequently an important part of their routines.3. They're mostly early risers, with significant exceptions, and do their best work in the first several hours of the day. There are a few nightowls but not many.4. They have a work routine that they adhere to almost fanatically.5. Finally, implicitly, habits are key in their successes and productivity. There, I've saved you the price of this book. The stories about the different artists are frequently interesting on their own account and very useful in fleshing out the "takeaways" listed above. I don't think it's intended as a self-help book. The author doesn't attempt to derive a series of lessons from his subjects' activities but a pattern emerges after reading a lot of these.

Excellent book for those readers who want to get a glimpse into the schedules of extraordinary talented artists...namely, that even true masters have to find the mundane ritual of daily routine a necessity when creating great work. The creative process is often thought of as elusive and transient, however this book goes to great lengths to show how a steady working schedule can often lead to some of the modern world's greatest creative achievements. Very inspiring for those wanting to create some kind of art in their day...

Small format books ask us not to take them seriously, but don't be fooled here. This little gem is a fount of inspiration for anyone with creative urges and dreams. The diversity of creators represented is a welcoming affirmation that whoever you are and however you create, there's a place for you at the table. If you're disciplined, you'll find models of discipline. If you're a hard partier, you'll have good company. If you're reclusive, you'll be affirmed in your desire and need for solitude. Mason Currey has done a fine job bringing creators from many centuries into our awareness to speak for themselves or be spoken about. Thank you.

This book was described in a catalog I receive. It sounded interesting so I checked out a copy from the local library. Half way through reading a library copy I ordered a copy. If you do creative work of any kind you are probably trying to find out how to organize your time and effort for best results. I am. I wanted to see how successful artists do it. This book is heavily researched and also very readable. It is not a 1,2 & 3 and you will be successful type book. It is about life stories. I bought a copy for ongoing reference. I have read it through and i'll be referring to it over the years.

I enjoyed this book and I wrote a complete review on my website. It's a bit lengthy to post here, but the following excerpt should be more enough to get my point across. Is your creativity driven by a looming deadline? Do you need four or five cups of Diet Pepsi or tea before you can even think of putting one word on the paper? Does the rest of the world need to be sleeping for you to hit your stride? Do you sometimes type the title of an article on the page just to see words on the page? Okay, well maybe I’m the only one that does those things. If not, join the ranks of many creatives that have rituals or behaviors that get their creative muscles warmed up and ready for the battle of the blank sheet or canvas. As a creative who grew up with other creatives, Daily Rituals piqued my interest and would hopefully feed my curious nature. Maybe this middle of the night creative could pick up a few tricks of the trade from some of the most successful artists in the world. Perhaps I could gain a little insight into how they became so successful and in some cases are still going strong. If nothing else, it would be fun to take a peek behind the curtain. And it was. I really enjoyed this book and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a quick, informative, enjoyable read.

[A] beautifully sprawling and marvelous work.” —The Dallas Morning News“Will give pleasure to anyone interested in original thinking about the brain. . . . Breathtakingly original.” —Financial Times  “Damasio introduces some novel ideas. . . . Intriguing.” —New Scientist“Adventurous, courageous, and intelligent. Antonio Damasio is one of the leading workers in the field of consciousness research. . . . I have great admiration for this book and its author.” —John Searle, The New York Review of Books “Damasio’s most  ambitious work yet. . . . A lucid and important work.” —Wired.com “A very interesting book . . . cogent, painstaking, imaginative, knowledgeable, honest, and persuasive . . . Damasio’s quest is both thorough and comprehensive.” —New York Journal of Books “Damasio’s continental European training sensitizes him to the reductionist traps that ensnare so many of his colleagues. His is the only one of the many consciousness books weighing down my shelves that feels it necessary to mention Freud’s . . . use of the term unconscious.” —The Guardian (Book of the Week) “A delight. You will embark on an intellectual journey well worth the effort.” —The Wilson Quarterly “Readers of [Damasio’s] earlier books will encounter again the clarity and the richness of a scientific theory nourished by the practice of the neurologist.” —L’Humanité (France) “Some scientific heavyweights have dared approach consciousness. Among them, Antonio Damasio has the immense advantage of a dual knowledge of the human brain, as scientist and clinician. In Self Comes to Mind he gives us a fascinating window of this interface between the brain and the world, which is grounded in our own body.” —Le Figaro (France) “The marvel of reading Damasio’s book is to be convinced one can follow the brain at work as it makes the private reality that is the deepest self.” —V. S. Naipaul, Nobel laureate and author of A Bend in the River “Damasio makes a grand transition from higher- brain views of emotions to deeply evolutionary, lower- brain contributions to emotional, sensory, and homeostatic experiences. He affi rms that the roots of consciousness are affective and shared by our fellow animals. Damasio’s creative vision leads relentlessly toward a natural understanding of the very font of being.” —Jaak Panksepp, author of Affective Neuroscience and Baily Endowed Chair for Animal Well- Being Science, Washington State University “I was totally captivated by Self Comes to Mind. Damasio presents his seminal discoveries in the fi eld of neuroscience in the broader contexts of evolutionary biology and cultural development. This trailblazing book gives us a new way of thinking about ourselves, our history, and the importance of culture in shaping our common future.” —Yo-Yo Ma

In Self Comes to Mind Antonio Damasio puts forth a hypothesis of how the physical brain produces the self-aware, subjective, experience of consciousness and mind. It is very well written, and is based in what we now know about the human brain, and how it works. If you concentrate carefully on what is being said it is quite understandable (I mention this because parts of the book can be complicated and requires attention). I find what is being presented to be very well thought out and formulated into, what I think, is a strong hypothesis. I believe that it's likely that much of what Damasio says will prove correct. Very good book. Highly recommended to anyone interested in the subject of how the brain creates a Self who is aware of and knows itself.

This is the best explanation of the development of consciousness and the human experience of selfhood that I’ve yet found. It’s the first of Damasio’s books that I’ve been able or willing to read all the way through, because this time around I think he has really begun to get to the heart of a coherent explanation of how we came to arrive at our capacity for self-awareness, reasoning, and planning, and — this time around —he presented his ideas and the research that support them in a reasonably accessible manner. It’s a bit dense in spots, not a particularly easy read (this is true of all of his books), but this one in particular rewards the patient reader. I recommend it to anyone who is interested in the science of consciousness.

The Bible!! No one else but Damasio could present such a complete theory of consciousness. Evolutionary brain, primate and human brain, primary consciousness, enhanced consciouness, and self-consciousness. He's one of the best science writers of our times, in ways comparable with Oliver Sachs. Technical matters flow like everyday discourse to create vivid imagery even for the uninitiated. Riding through the ether of brainy science, he weaves a tale that pushes aside membranes, bones, tissues, cells and other matter to present what is under the skull and what constitutes the self. Anyone interested in the science of the brain and of the conscious self, this read is a must.Marshall Shumsky, PhDBrain Science

Impossible to read. The book is filled anatomical terms that mean nothing to the lay reader.I'm sure neuroscientist will find it engaging but, again, any lay reader will be at a loss way before the middle of the book.

I am excited to hear the advances in neuroscience which Damasio is leading, and helping us to understand. Brain stem foundations of a sense of self? Identified Convergence-Divergence Zones (neural net intersects) and PMC's ? Balancing the major sources of neuroscience knowledge(lesion, neuroimaging, neuron activity, magnetic) with the fourth correlate of optimal survival at primal levels--one of his many brilliant moves during his career. The same technique should be usable with additional criteria. The self experience as--(1) primordial, (2) core and (3) autobiographical--is pure explanatory power, since it allows for the embodied self experience, the customary self experience, and the self experience we become to ourselves and others (autobiographical/narrative)--all foundational to reality--with implicated underlying neuroanatomical processes: brain stem, thalamus, cerebral cortex, respectively.I loved hearing this neuroscientist give his account of witnessing a Pelican diving into the water: all explained by underlying neuroanatomical processes. Damasio, as a neuroscientist, has neuroanatomical maps that the rest of us do not see. That makes it very tempting for him to believe that what he "sees" automatically is truth.Damasio has a long history of fighting against the cognitive bent of both neuroscience and philosophy. He has provided cogent research on the foundation of emotions in neuroscience, which is still an uphill battle. He fought against philosophers who would reduce the human to Cartesian dualism. Congratulations to him for fighting the good fight, against the grain. And yet he finds himself ironically being critiqued for making the cognitive error of mistaking his scientific observations for philosophical truth, the circular reasoning of assuming consciousness to explain consciousness, call it what you will: [...] (See John Searle, New York Review of Books, 2011)To clear it up, I have an idea of how to approach eliminating the problem for the reader:(1) If you think of having a text replace function, and go through his book and do the following: replace "image" with map (or schema), replace "self" with "self experience," and replace "consciousness" with "experience of consciousness," you will eliminate the problem of word choice. However, you can take the words out of the argument, but you can't take the argument out of the words.(2) Watch out for the ideological/metaphysical argument. He is arguing for "consciousness" as a construct (as a "thing-in-itself"), and for "self" as an agent of consciousness, and as "consciousness" as an increased level of species development. That is when the philosophers and all of us general readers start reacting/disorienting, and feel confused because he has gone off the road. You can tell when he is in the ditch: when he starts claiming that he is not Cartesian, because he is arguing for the existence of consciousness, that "image" is not about a false Cartesian correspondence theory between what we see and what is there, etc.. This false idealism is not only disorienting to critics and us, but also to his ability to simply put his brilliant science out there and let it speak for itself: Just let our sense of self be the product of the consciousness processes outlined.(3) Enjoy this otherwise brilliant life-work.(4) Networks of the Brain by Olaf Sporns helps to found brain mapping in a more coherent and emergent context so that the philosophical pitfalls of Damasio's approach are avoided.PS: You can skip the last chapter. His attempts to apply his theory to real life problems seem painfully naive: "cognitive unconscious" regarding ethics (yikes)? A neurobiological basis for writing just laws for society? etc.
