The stories in this book have all been previously published, so if you're a fan of the author, they won't be new to you. I don't usually seek out "humor" books, since many of them seem to take the business of being funny way too seriously. So I've been seeing references to Sedaris for years, but never read any of his stuff. My loss. If these stories are typical, he's both funny and thoughtful, which is a nice combination. The opening story "SantaLand Diaries" is the story that put this author on the map when it was read on NPR. It's the sort of "autobiographical fiction" (i.e. based on his life, but exaggerated for comic effect) that Sedaris does so beautifully. It's a classic.Sedaris admits to some exaggeration, so maybe writing stories about holidays is a natural fit for his talents. Americans take their celebrations very seriously indeed, with the result that observing behavior during holidays is even more entertaining than observing behavior the rest of the time. Holidays bring out the crazy in all of us. Ask any cop or ER nurse or Mall Santa. Even normal people go whack-o.I loved the Christmas letters that spiral out of control. I howled at the critiques of children's holiday productions. Naturally, your own offspring (or grandchildren, nieces, nephews, etc) are charming, talented, and delightful, but who the hell thought we'd want to watch those other boring brats? But my favorites were "Dinah the Christmas Whore" and "Let It Snow" because of the glimpses into the strange family that shaped this author's twisted outlook on life. His family may have been "Southern by the Grace of Greyhound" but they fit right in. Anyone who grew up in a dysfunctional family will recognize the characters and situations. Those of you who grew up in a normal family don't know what you missed.I think most of these stories are ones I would enjoy re-reading and the collection is a great introduction to this author's writing. After all, this is a man who's been called "one of the funniest writers alive." By The Economist. And if people who write about the economy don't know great humor when they see, I can't imagine who does.

I like David Sedaris. His off-beat humor matches up with what I think is funny. I don't like it so much when he ventures into fiction, although I have to admit his Six to Eight Black Men and The Cow and the Turkey were spot on. The Monster Mash just didn't click with me, but the SantaLand Diaries was worth the price of the book.Sedaris is meant to be heard, and I can hear his voice reading these short stories as I read them. His unique speaking voice and writing voice are unmistakable. Nobody sound just like David Sedaris. Funny and poignant, both voices combine into a reading experience like none other.

As someone who gets depressed this time of year, and I know I'm not alone in this - this is my antidepressant! How can I be sad at all the signs of Christmas while I'm laughing my butt off with David Sedaris as an elf with me? Best to listen to it read by Sedaris himself, (he reads his work SO well!) but I have heard it so many times that when I read it I can almost hear him speaking in my head. I used to listen to it on the car between Thanksgiving and New Year's, and it really helped. Buy it for the people you know who get sad or just don't like this time of year!!! I do have a complaint with Amazon though - my copy, shipped along with another book, arrived bent! I'll try weighing it down with a stack of heavy books to weigh it down and hopefully straighten it out, but they should have shipped it differently - maybe between 2 sheets of heavy cardboard or something. But I highly recommend the book - one of the funniest I've ever read!!!!

I don't share much of a background with David Sedaris, I'm not from a "middle class" family, I have no college education (IVY LEAGUE even, c'mon), no one in my family has had anything to do with the arts, I'm an only freakin' child, I'm born bred and have always lived in the North West, I don't even have a passport let alone the means to live in any country I please... The list could continue and for some readers things like this make Sedaris' writing out of reach, even insulting. The thing is though we seem to have absolutely nothing in common we do have one thing, tiny as it may be, we the commanality of being human and living during this particular era. That is what connects me to him and his writing, his humble humanity. He knows he isn't a beauty queen, he consistently blunders through life making mistakes, playing the fool even and yet he has this amazing ability to WRITE about it, to share it with thw world and make fun of himself OUT LOUD to millions of readers. I love him for that, I love him for the fact academia hasn't sapped the humanity out of him and made him feel blunder proof or at least made him a blunder snob, hiding behind eight letter words that no one knows the true meaning of, ducking behind an Ivy league education.I picked this particular book up because my best friend is in the hospital, has been, will be, for a while. I have learned that he CANNOT handle being alone so I sit there, hour upon hour and try to read him to sleep. Sedaris' short stories and essays are perfect hospital food right? The problem is reading them aloud for the first time is hard because he makes laugh out loud (and not many do)so in the quiet hospital corridors one room is bellowing with laughter, from me, from my sick friend who really shouldn't be laughing right now, it hurts him, but he won't let me stop. A nurse cruises in inevitably when I am reading something that out of context seems dirty, it becomes even funnier. My context of reading this particular Sedaris book aside it is really a very funny, charming piece of literature that connects with the reader on many levels. The parts that others seem to be offended or put off by, I say read them with zeal, be happy that someone out there is making enough money off being a boob, off proudly being a boob to travel to Japan and France and across the U.S. and is taking the time (for money maybe but whatever) to share his experiences as a pretty much average Joe with us. Be happy to read from someone who relishes in the oddities, who isn't always tring to make you sympathetic and tearful. It really is a rare quality. You will find that most contemporary memoir(ish) literature relies on human empathy and sad, sad, sad, SAD parts of life. It's nice to take a break and read from someone who can tell you abot his mother dying of lung cancer in one paragraph and have you giggling in the next.Comedy or Tragedy, life is what you make of it. Trust me I have my own fair share of the comedically tragic, but when my friends can laugh at the crazy things I say and do when I am hallucinating because Lupus is attacking my brain I am way better than when they are crying over it.David Sedaris has the ability to make you laugh over things that put another way might make you cry. AND he has inspired me to REALLY quit smoking, I am done with cigarettes.

I bought this book because the author's books `Skin' and `Trash' are spotlighted in the anthologies `Courting Pleasure' and `Lovers: love and sex stories' by Tee A. Corinne. I enjoyed them both tremendously and sought out this book. From the back of the book - [...] Out of Carolina, nominated for the 1992 National Book Award for fiction, introduced Dorothy Allison as one of the most passionate and gifted writers of her generation. Now, in Two or Three Things I Know for Sure, she takes a probing look at her family's history to give us a lyrical, complex memoir that explores how the gossip of one generation can become legends for the next.Illustrated with photographs from the author's personal collection, Two or Three Things I Know for Sure tells the story of the Gibson women -- sisters, cousins, daughters, and aunts -- and the men who loved them, often abused them, and, nonetheless, shared their destinies. With luminous clarity, Allison explores how desire surprises and what power feels like to a young girl as she confronts abuse. As always, Dorothy Allison is provocative, confrontational, and brutally honest. Two or Three Things I Know for Sure, steeped in the hard-won wisdom of experience, expresses the strength of her unique vision with beauty and eloquence.Lambda Literary Award: Finalist

Dorothy Allison's Aunt Dot said she only new two or three things for sure and added, "Of course, they are never the same things." This slim volume, a family history memoir, celebrates the way that women know and affirms that what women know is different from what men know. Allison not only tells an engaging story, she tells her story with clear compassion for all concerned. That doesn't mean she hedges around about the truth. It means that one of the things she knows for sure is that "if we are not beautiful to each other, then we cannot know beauty in any form." Compassion goes along with being beautiful to one another. This book is both honest and forgiving. and as such reminds us to look with an open heart on our life circumstances. Don't compound the hurt or the suffering with hate suggests Allison in a mere 94 pages. I suspect most people will want to read this book more than once. I pull it out when when I feel my heart closing and each time, the thing I come to know is never the same thing.

A self-proclaimed and widely-admired story teller, Dorothy Allison goes from novels into straight memoir with Two or Three Things I Know for Sure. But here's the thing: it's lyrical, poetic, gorgeous writing. Shouldn't be a surprise, I guess, as she IS a poet (something I blush to admit I didn't actually know), but surprised I was.Sprinkled throughout the `story' are little 3-4 line snippets in italics, each one beginning with the words her aunt used to say: Two or three things I know for sure... And then she completes the sentence in different ways, based on what she's focusing on. Here's one: "No one is as hard as my uncles had to pretend to be." This very short little book (less than 100 pages) is so beautifully written, dense with pain and the cruelty of her South Carolina childhood, as well as that of not just her family, but her townsfolk, her whole "white trash" social class. Topics range from lust, rape, rage, loss, poverty, beatings, agandonment, and that's just for starters. Dorothy Allison has an ability to write about exceedingly painful subjects with a luminousness that transforms the cruelty of life. The cadence, the rhythm, the music of the words and the writing carries the reader along. Apparently this was written as a performance piece, and it shows. Old family photos are included, and I found myself flipping constantly to the ID list to get a bead on who she was talking about. And yet, it's a beautiful book. Don't miss it.

From the Author's note at the end of the book..."'Two or Three Things I Know for Sure' was written for performance in the months of completing my novel 'Bastard Out of Carolina'."The book is adapted from that material. I sure wish I had Allison's storytelling ability. She tells what it's like for the women of her family, a family from rural South Carolina, what it was like for her being part of that family. What it's like is your dreams get done under early on in life, any possibility of being more than your family get squashed out of you by denial or brute reality of being poor and female in the South. That this didn't happen to Allison, that she continued to rise up, is a boon to the rest of us, and does what Marianne Williamson says so wonderfully, "by shining, she gives the rest of us permission to shine too." By daring to tell her story, she allows the rest of us to tell ours too. Difficult stories are the ones that NEED to be told.Thank all the gods above and below for Dorothy Allison.

Great read. Very well written.

This memoir was great, and it was a quick read. I love how Dorothy Allison writes.

This was written for performance but it is a compelling read that carries at its heart all the truth women hide within themselves. Women can be weak and they can be incredibly strong. This collection acknowledges that fact.

Allison has a hard time creating a physical world, but she successfully creates a world of her life as we move through her childhood to her adulthood. The use of pictures is really interesting but doesn't ground you, since you're never really sure who the subjects of the pictures are. Some may not like the style, as it is fast-paced and the rhetorical structure is almost violent at times with choppy stories and very little grounding in time. I thought the ending was too surreal and strange, but the rest of the book can be quite enjoyable.

Saving International Adoption: An Argument from Economics and Personal Experience

Review

"Illuminating? Infuriating? It depends on your perspective when you open the book. Mark Montgomery and Irene Powell bring their experience as economists and adoptive parents to a subject where views have become both polarized and petrified. An informed, novel, and provocative contribution to the debate on international adoption, a subject desperately in need of new insights."—Dana E. Johnson, MD, Professor of Pediatrics, University of Minnesota"This book takes a refreshingly candid and original look at issues in international adoption. With courage and insight, the authors apply the disciplinary lens of economics to examine the regulation of international adoption and the unintended consequences of that regulation for vulnerable children and families. Required reading for those who seek novel perspectives advocating for every child's fundamental right to a family."—Rebecca Compton, Professor of Psychology, Haverford College, and author of Adoption Beyond Borders: How International Adoption Benefits Children

This book is full of information necessary to understand where International Adoption is today. It's well researched and mapped out. However the main purpose of the book is to explain their theory on paying birth parents during the adoption process. This seems backwards to me, the current system of International Adoption is already incredibly corrupt due to monetary greed and, knowing that, they still want to put more money into it? We already have birth mothers, countries and organizations selling children solely for monetary gain. I agree these countries and families may need help but is encouraging them to sell their children really the answer? No child should ever be attached to a price tag. Is it so inconceivable to propose we get rid of monetary compensation all together? (I would actually really like someone to answer this question.)Four stars for the information, minus a star for promoting the selling of human beings.

this book blends the two well. I heard the authors speak at a recent adoptive families conference and bought the book out of curiosity. I must say they present their theory well in this engaging and accessible book. The book isn't dry and technical; the authors add enough real life examples to make it readable for the layperson. The authors speak from the heart as well as the head. This is a good read for anyone open to the idea of a different way to improve the life of kids AND the two sets of parents.

Definitely pro-international Adoption, yet surprisingly balanced. Also, very readable and not too academic for what seems to be a well-researched book. They propose something that seems audacious to solve the main problems in international adoption, but they’ve pretty much convinced me by the end. What’s weird is that what seems unthinkable for worldwide adoption of kids, is what is the norm in the US and accepted. That is, open adoption and some payment of birth moms allowed, though not encouraged. Pretty cool.

I had the pleasure of hearing Mark and Irene speak at a recent conference. Their presentation style is very similar to the style of their book- engaging, down to earth, a bit humorous, and backed by lots of data.As I listened to their presentation I found myself intrigued by their proposal, but not convinced. After reading their book on the subject I am still not sure I'm convinced that their idea would work, but it sure seems like it's worth a try. They definitely make a good case for their argument and I can see a point where I would come around to their way of thinking, especially if their method has some initial success. Their book definitely made clear that what's happening now is not working, and is preventing children who need homes and families who want children from coming together, for merely political reasons. I also enjoyed the stories about Isata that were interspersed through the book.I recommend this book to anyone interested in international adoption, and especially for those who have or who are considering adopting a child from overseas.

Evidence based and very thorough. An interesting read.
