A fun and simple little book packed with the wisdom of Walt Disney. This book collects quotes from Walt Disney on a wide range of topics, including Mickey Mouse, Disneyland, movies and animation, television, education, America, business, the Walt Disney Company (known as Walt Disney Productions when Walt was still alive), animals, art & music, and other areas as well. Many of the quotes in this book are fairly well known ("...it was all started by a mouse.", "we keep moving forward", "we call it Imagineering - the blending of creative imagination and technical know-how", etc.) as well as many that are on the more obscure side. As you read through this book, you get a sense of how Walt Disney approached his life and his work. You also get a glimpse into the philosophy that made Walt Disney one of the most influential creative geniuses in history. We all have things to learn through our lives, and finding the right teachers and role models is one of the most important things we can each do to improve our lives. No matter who you are or what you want to do with your life, Walt Disney has something to teach you, and this book is a great place to start your lessons.I recommend this book anyone interested in learning more about Walt Disney.

Many of these quotes are the ones you see around Disneyland during construction. The positive yet realistic outlook from these snippets is inspiring. Wise and at the same entrepreneurial ideas on how to run a business, how to treat others, even how to see the world, are all gems that reveal a man much more clever and groundbreaking than I gave him credit for. It's a great guest bathroom book.

Kids growing up these days lose sight of the fact that Walt Disney was, above all, a man and not just a brand name. He followed his dreams, even though many tried to discourage him, told him his ideas would never work and he stuck with his dreams... even resolutely going through a bankruptcy. The Quotable Walt Disney is just that: quotes. But if you're interested in what made the man who founded an empire (with a little help from a mouse he saw one day) tick...then you need to buy, read and even underline this book. True, these ARE quotes. And, true, as a former journalist (who is now a ventriloquist) I recognize a lot of "statements" in there -- pro forma quotes given to journalists, self-serving statements, etc. But there are also tons of gems. There are inspring quotes you can go back to and read again and again. I'm going to read it again and mark the ones I want to go back to, and paperclip them. Some entail the importance of determination; others such qualities as open-mindedness, the importance of surrounding yourself with capable colleagues, the wonder of finding inspiration for creativity in the least likely places. Yes, this IS a book of quotes. A small book. But it'll save you LOTS of time if you "listen" to Walt in this compact book, rather than having to read the many (and sometimes bad) biographies about him. And amid the formal statements given in countless interviews you'll find true gems. Like any gem, you can look a jewel of quote in wonder again and again. If you apply these gems in your life, it will be worth far more than the price of this quote-filled book.

Words cannot describe how in love with Walt I am! The books is what it says it is; a bunch of quotes divided into chapters of his professional or social life and some of the quotes make you wonder why anyone would even document them but others make you truly appreciate the magic and inspiration that is Walt. I loved it but I can see why many people would think it was a waste.

I LOVED THIS BOOK. WALT DISNEY KNEW WHAT TO SAY AND HOW TO SAY IT TO GET HIS POINT ACROSS. MOST OF HIS QUOTES ARE FILLED WITH HAPPY THOUGHTS AND WISE ADVICE. HE SAW THE INNOCENCE IN CHILDREN AND APPLIED THAT TO HIS WORK AND HIS WAY OF LIFE. I REALLY LIKE THE WAY THE BOOK IS BROKEN DOWN INTO VERY INFORMATIVE CHAPTERS.THIS BOOK IS SO FULL OF SO MANY OF HIS IDEAS AND BELIEFS THAT MAKE YOU THINK ,AND THEY ARE VERY GOOD FOR PASSING ON TO FRIENDS AND FAMILY, AND MAKE EXCELLENT QUOTES FOR BIRTHDAY OR OTHER OCCASION CARDS.

Very inspiring quotes! Great to take anywhere to read in free time.

This was a gift for my mom when she was in the hospital for hip surgery, it gave her some light reading and wonderful insight into walt Disney! its a small book but so nicely done!

Walt Disney was an amazing man. Great quotes, great ideas, great inspiration! Scroll up and get your copy!Mark BowserAmazon.com/author/markbowser

Daughter gave me this book upon a visit to Texas. I read it and believe it is the most informative history of the US I have ever seen. For example, in my education I learned about the post-Civil War Reconstruction period - but not like this! And finally understood why things are the way they are in terms of Civil Rights, voting rights, and a hundred other matters. Besides being a terrific history of Texas specifically and the Western frontier generally. Also the best history I have ever read about the influence of the Anglo-Scots on American society and political traditions.

This book is a fine rebuke to the view that "regional" historians are in some way lesser voices than those who choose larger canvases. Mr. Fehrenbach's reputation had been built well before Lone Star by his previous works which gave him a wide and deep understanding of his ultimate subject.Yet, he found and used many sources never previously consulted. This is an exceptional book as must be a work which does justice in one volume to a subject as broad, deep, and complex as the entire history of what today is Texas. For example, his chapter entitled "The Anglo-Celts" traces the Europeans who became the most influential settlers of Texas in a succinct tour de force of factors encouraging emigration, ethnography, political experience, social influences, and adaptation to first colonial and then wilderness America; including a strong counter-argument to F. J. Turner's frontier thesis. He is scrupulously fair in his presentation of the Amerinds and their treatment, of Spain, of the Spanish officialdom in Mexico, and later of Mexican leaders. As he also strives to allow the facts to speak on the early giants including Austin, Crockett, Travis, Houston -- offering neither hagiography nor unsupported claims. The book appeared originally in 1968 but was updated with additions in 2000. If you wish to understand Texas today, there is no better education.

Texas has a truly unique history compared to the other states. It was the only state to enter the union as a sovereign country, and, as such, negotiated concessions from Congress other states could not. Its history from 1810 through the Reconstruction era was turbulent, with immigrants, Indians, Mexicans, and the American Civil War all playing a major role in the state's development. Fehrenbach does a good job of identifying and explaining these disparate elements. He develops the role of each group from the early indian tribes through the immigrants of the 19th century. I sensed a little bias for the Anglos who settled the state and fought for the Confederacy, but, overall, he gave me a good understanding for the uniqueness Texas still claims today. Long and detailed, I would recommend this book to anyone looking for an in depth understanding of the Lone Star State.

T. R. Fehrenbach tells the Texas story as one who knows and loves his native soil. While many stories abound describing Texas's beginnings, Fehrenbach reveals the minds and souls of the first settlers to make their way to a distant and hostile land and carve out a different kind of world from the "civilized" America of their past. The first settlers were a hardy breed of frontiersmen, well-suited to the rigors of the wilderness that comprised Texas. From Stephen A. Austin's "300" to the Indian fighters and Texas Rangers that came later, Texas drew the bold and brave; independent men who sought land and freedom to live as they wished, unfettered by laws that made no sense to them.Texas is different. Fehrenbach' s history of this great state explains how and why. From the East Texas cotton plantations that thrived before the War, to the arid Panhandle into which farmers trickled after the Comanches were conquered, to the vast stretches of mesquite and catclaw where longhorn cattle roamed to the Rio Bravo that formed the Texas/Mexico border, Texas has a history like no other state; the only Republic, whose flag can be flown alongside the U. S. flag.Fehrenbach takes the reader from the earliest days of struggle and chaos into the relative peace and prosperity of modern Texas, leaving some of us to wish the old ways hadn't flown.I recommend this history to all who share a love of Texas.

Want to read the most real history of Texas that can be read? Buy this book. The "Texas History" books that are in the schools today are "history rewritten", not real history. This is a classic that every school age Texan should read; buy it for your kids and make them read it. It will serve them well in their future lives.

The first 90% of this book comprises one of the most detailed and thorough histories of Texas from it's earliest days through annexation, the Civil War and its aftermath to the post-World War II period. It is in my opinion fascinating reading. The final ten percent, though the author strives to make it interesting, is pure political history - as though that's all that's left. If you're interested in the who-screws-who of modern politics, even that may be of interest to you.But - that first 90% is OUTSTANDING.

I first encountered T.R. Fehrenbach many years ago when I came across "This Kind of War" which put the Korean experience into an entirely new light for me. I greatly enjoyed Lone Star as well, particularly the portions concerning the protracted frontier phase on the plains during which the conflict with the Comanche and other Indians made settlement such a challenging undertaking. The description of that conflict and particularly the role of the Texas Rangers and their adoption of the Colt revolvers was new information to me as was the detailed description of the lifestyle and culture of the horse Indians. I found the analogy he made between the situations of the early North America Texas settlers and those who founded and now live in Israel quite compelling. I followed this volume with "Comanches" by the same author and "The Son" by Richard Meyer to improve my sense of that era, both of which I also recommend highly.

Jonathan Edwards: A Life, by George M. Marsden

From Publishers Weekly

Although probably best known for his fire-and-brimstone sermon, "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God," Jonathan Edwards led a rich intellectual and spiritual life that took him far beyond the pulpit in his contributions to colonial America. In this first critical biography in over 60 years, Marsden, a professor of history at Notre Dame, places Edwards squarely within the context of his times. Drawing on newly available sources in the Yale edition of The Works of Jonathan Edwards, he elegantly traces the details of Edwards's life, from his precocious childhood of observing God's handiwork in the natural world and his adolescent struggles with his faith to his powerful preaching in the revivals that dominated the Connecticut Valley in the First Great Awakening to his later modestly successful mission to the Indians. From his childhood, Edwards struggled to understand the sovereignty of God, and as he later developed his theology he placed the "religious affections" at the center of his notions about God's sovereignty. Marsden reminds us that Edwards struggled with his faith as he labored to write his treatises on the freedom of the will, the religious affections and the nature of true virtue. Marsden's elegant prose and vivid, vivacious storytelling brings Edwards to life. This magisterial and definitive biography reveals the complexities of Edwards's life and provides new appreciation for his commitment to fostering religious sensibilities in the increasingly secular world of his time. This is a beautifully written book about one of America's most important thinkers. Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist

In the first full critical biography of Edwards in 60 years, a distinguished Notre Dame scholar humanizes America's greatest colonial clergyman, a man highly esteemed in his own time but since singled out for decades of abuse by Puritan-bashers. To be sure, Edwards' brimstone pulpit rhetoric (most famously deployed in his 1741 sermon "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God") offends modern sensibilities. But Marsden--drawing heavily on recent scholarship--restores Edwards to an eighteenth-century New England where most shared his doctrines, though few could rival him in the power with which he preached them. Exceptional insight shines through a felicitous style as Marsden recounts how Edwards acquired that power, the intellectual rigor of his Yale studies gradually lending force to his intense spiritual vision. His rare gifts enabled Edwards to kindle the Great Awakening, emblazoning his name on the pages of American history. But in narrating Edwards' luminous achievements, Marsden also scrutinizes the periods of deep personal depression and probes the dark drama of jealousy that cost him his position of ecclesiastical prominence. The man who emerges from this tangle of triumph and travail defies the easy stereotypes of the hellfire preacher: tender in his pastoral care, passionate in his conjugal loyalty, joyous in his celebration of divine love, unintentionally democratic in his New Light theology. Neither alabaster saint nor cardboard hypocrite, the Edwards Marsden delivers will fascinate serious students of American culture and history. Jonathan Edwards is one of the most influential and remarkable figures in the history of Christianity. In terms of theological influence, none since Calvin had shaped the thought of evangelicals the way Edwards did. The works he published has carried on the tradition of Calvinism and has especially contributed to the Christian Hedonism of John Piper, Sam Storms, and others. His corpus of theological works is worthy of consideration for any serious theology student. Edwards was the premier theologian of the 18th century and there has yet to be a theologian to surpass his greatness since. However, Jonathan Edwards the theologian is only one title that only describes one aspect of his being. Jonathan Edwards was also a devoted husband, father, and missionary. His supreme love for God flowed over into every other aspect of his life.Because of his influence and example as theologian, husband, father, and more, Jonathan Edwards is worthy of studying his works and his life and if one is found without the other in a biography, the reader will come away disappointed. In fact, even approaching the authorship of a biography of a man like Edwards is an enormous task. What Marsden does in this biography of Edwards is he shows us Jonathan Edwards, the man. We see both his life and his theological works, and how the latter fits into the former. For such a polarizing and influential figure, Marsden remarkably “gets him.” This is why this biography must be considered the primary biography on Jonathan Edwards and can already be considered a classic.SummaryMarsden accomplishes the goal of painting an accurate and compelling picture of Edwards by examining the complete journey of his life. Marsden provides a holistic understanding of Edwards’ thought and personal struggles. Edwards’ teachings are brought out within the context of his life. What Marsden does throughout all thirty chapters is trace the life, ministry, thinking, and theology of Jonathan Edwards through various joys and struggles. Whether it is detailing taking over as pastor of Solomon Stoddard’s church, or describing the painful ousting of Edwards from the same post, Marsden honestly portrays Edwards as a man who adored the triune God and faced everything in his life with utter confidence in him. Marsden presents Edwards’ life in what seems to be three different sections.First, Marsden examines the childhood of Edwards. Here Marsden discusses his lineage by giving some background to his parents. Edwards’ mind is portrayed in this section in his pre-Christian state. Edwards’ conversion is described as happening over a period of time and not in an instantaneous moment. Edwards understood his conversion as he slowly grew spiritually. In the second section, Marsden chronicles a time of growth, reflection, and personal suffering for Edwards and his family when they were in Northampton. During this time, Marsden details Edwards’ relationship with David Brainerd as well as Edwards’ marriage to Sarah and the birth of his seven children. This section also gave space to the First Great Awakening where revivals hit America. Marsden discusses Edwards’ role in the spiritual explosion in Protestantism in America. It is here that Marsden demonstrates his candor and honesty when it comes to Edwards. He writes that Edwards probably overstated the extent of the revivals that happened in Northampton. Nevertheless, Edwards was a primary figure in the Great Awakening. In the third and final section, Marsden chronicles the latter years of Edwards’ life. Edwards goes from being a pastor to a missionary to Native Americans and then finally he takes the position of President of Princeton before his death. Marsden focuses on Edwards writing in this section and after a thorough look at Edwards’ life, his writings can be more accurately understood. One thing that is particularly helpful is the correct context that we are taken into. Edwards considered himself to be a citizen of Great Britain and was politically “pre-Revolutionary” (1). Edwards grew up in the colonial time of the New World. It was during this time that the First Great Awakening was prepped. As it was, Edwards viewed this arrival of revival as being a direct work of a sovereign God. From the initial overview of Edwards’ life to the summation of the legacy he left behind, Marsden carefully probes the history in such detail that this biography can be simultaneously viewed as a weighty history book. Marsden’s dwelling on the historical context gives great reliability and better understandability to the life and ministry of Edwards. To ignore the history of the time of Edwards is to miss the major influences on Edwards’ mind and ministry. Understanding any historical figure must be done so within the historical context in which he lived. Marsden takes readers into 18th century pre-Revolutionary America, which provides a much clearer portrait of Edwards. Critical EvaluationMarsden’s biography on Edwards is the premier Edwards biography and it seems that there are a few reasons worth mentioning. Firstly, Marsden gives fair attention to the life of Edwards and the works of Edwards. One is not forsaken for the other. Marsden would break away from the biographical life and look at Edwards the author as he chronologically approached his writing in the course of his life. As Edwards’ writing appeared in his life, so did Marsden bring it out. This is evidence of Marsden’s unparalleled research.A second major strength of this work is its overall historical prowess. While most biographies do well with the immediate historical context, Marsden goes above and beyond by deeply bringing out all of the historical significance of Edwards’ life and the time period in which he lived.A third strength is the unbiased tone and direction this biography takes. Biographies by nature are usually biased one way or another. Marsden accomplishes the goal he sets out in the preface to produce an unbiased portrait of Edwards (xvii, xviii). One example is Edwards’ removal from his pastorate at Northampton. The way Marsden presents the details of the decision to remove Edwards, the reader is forced to draw his or her own conclusions as to whether his removal was just or not. By avoiding bias, Marsden stands in the backdrop and allows Edwards to speak for himself through his words, writings, and actions.ConclusionJonathan Edwards: A Life is quite simply a masterpiece. There is no greater biography on this giant theologian. While this biography is self-admittedly not an exhaustive look at Edwards’ life, Marsden leaves little to be desired. If one wants to know Edwards the man, pastor, and theologian, he or she must look no further than Marsden’s work. Edwards is a figure who will always be talked about. This discussion has been greatly aided by the work of Marsden. This honest portrayal of a sinner redeemed by grace helps those looking back to Edwards not to idolize him, but actually learn from him—from his sins and from his devotion to the God he loved and adored.

I have heard this book highly praised by anyone who has read it. It's been called "one of the best biographies ever written." I've read a fair amount of Edwards lately, and decided it was time to get the full picture of his life. What an incredible experience!Marsden says, "one of my goals has been to understand him as a real person in his own time." (p. 2) He succeeds marvelously. I am guilty of gross historical inaccuracies in my thinking. I generally read my own circumstances back into the events of the past in more ways than I can even begin to realize: geography, population, theology, politics, education, etc. Marsden brings 18th century New England alive, and it is very different from what we are used to. In particular, he highlights the Englishness of pre-revolutionary New England, in contrast to our own Americanism. They had family based hierarchies. Boston was the hub, New York was just getting going. Schools that we view as ancient (Princeton) were just being born. The western edge of Massachusetts was the western edge of the "civilized world"! People were literally being kidnapped and killed by Indians, and the wars with the French were a constant tension. After reading this biography, I feel like I know the history of the period like I never have before. I understand the founding era of our country like I never have before. Combined with The Religious Beliefs of America's Founders)), I feel like I have a grasp of the facts, not just the popular simplifications of today.More important than early New England history, though, is that I now know Edwards, and he is inspiring. Marsden portrays him in all his depths. The depth and development of his thought is explored at length, in particular his philosophy and his theology. I was stretched intellectually by this treatment of Edwards's intellect. But this is not at all at the expense of the depth of his heart and his affections. I was moved to rapturous worship reading this biography. Edwards combined deep thinking about God with equally deep love and delight in God, and this shines through in this biography. The events of his life are given full detailed treatment all the way through. Even if you are familiar with most of the key events, this brings them to life like no conference message can. His character is displayed. He was a great christian, but he was also a sinner. This is no hagiography. The good shines forth brilliantly, and the sin (which Edwards himself deeply lamented!) is shown as well.Lastly, I must comment on Marsden's writing, which overlaps with his scholarship as well. This is an example of historical biography as exquisite art. Reading this book was at times a deeply aesthetic experience to be savored the whole way through. This is one of those books where 50 pages in you wish the book was twice as long, and realize that you will need to take care to relish every page.On so many levels, these and others as well, this book is a masterpiece. One of the best books I have ever read.

#2,130,662 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

This was supposed to be the original 1818 version of the book, but it isn’t. It’s a bizarre copy - there are no publishing notes at all. It’s missing the Preface. I compared the first few chapters to an online version of the 1818 book and I noticed differences in Letter 3 where a whole paragraph was added. I would need to check the 1831 version to see if that is what this book is. I should return it but it was $4 and not worth the effort.

This book was one of the biggest surprises for me! Absolutely NOTHING what I expected. When someone says word "Frankenstein", you think about a lab, a mad proffesor, some lightning buzzing into the bolts inside monster's head. Drop all this imagination! This classical book had nothing of it! :O Maybe that's why I was so amazed. If I didn't have all those expectations, maybe my rating would be lower, but now, damn, I liked it a lot! Since I have so much to say, I'll just drop it into a list, of good and bad things :)1) It's awesome that Amazon is giving free ebooks for classical literature like this! Thanks, Amazon! And what a surprise it was for me, that this Kindle edition is the real original "Frankenstein", but audiobook narrated by George Guidhall is of a later edition (which was edited by the author herself, when her book became famous). So reading those two books where more like reading two separate books for me - one ebook and one audiobook, with quite a lot of changes, even so major as who Elizabeth was to Victor - a real cousin, or just a girl taken from street! :O2) As I said, I have expected this book to be absolutely different! A horror story, about making a man from different body parts. Actually this only took a few pages of the book. All the book was Victor's thoughts about what he had done, creatures thoughts about humankind, and 3) a lot a lot A LOT of words misery, wretchedness and countenance :D My oh my, I have never read so many same QQing thoughts in my life! :D This book could be a good 5 star if Victor's thoughts weren't so TERRIBLY repetitive. He said he feels misery/is miserable/life's misery at least 135 times (just did a search in my Kindle). I won't even count other of his cryings. I should be ashamed of making fun of his inner tortures. Victor Frankenstein had a really difficult life, but I'm not if it was a good idea by the author to write it in such a repetitive way! but on the other hand - it was an absolutely different style from the books I usually read, so also a good thing.4) Never ever don't you dear call a man-made-man a "Frankenstein"! He didn't have a name! Frankenstein was his creator. But the creature was just that - a creature. And what a surprise he was! All my life I thought of Frankenstein's creature to be a mindless monster, with bolts in his head, making ugly sounds and walking like a zombie. That's what those movies show! But this was such a mistake of mine! :O Creature was one of the most intelligent characters in the story! His ability to deduct, to learn, to feel... he was amazing! The story creature told about his first year of life was so heartgripping that I felt so fond of him, so sorry for him... Sadly later he changed.. Loniness makes people (and other creatures) do bad things... :( But still.. he was not a mindless zombie. He was extremely sensitive being.. With emotions on extremities - both good and bad. But wouldn't we be like that, if we didn't have parents and comfort of other people to learn from?I highly recommend this book to everyone who wants to read some intricate English language, but who has enough patience to suffer though all characters' repetitive sufferings (pun intended). This book is emotional, but not in a romantic way. It makes You think about creators responsibility against the creation. And most of all, it shows how Your decisions can change Your whole life!

If you're reading this review, you only have one question. You're not looking for a book review, you already know it's a classic. You already know this is the most original, and one of the best, and best-written horror stories in literature. You may or may not like the story, but that's a matter of personal taste. A lot of people don't like Shakespeare, but no one questions whether he was a good writer or not. If you don't like the writing style, it's because you aren't familiar with the English of this period. Nearly eighty years before Stoker's "Dracula" ( an idea stolen from Polidori's "The Vampyre", which was an idea stolen from LeFanu's "Carmilla"), this most-original horror masterpiece was born. So, your only question is, "Is this really the uncensored 1818 version? Because I've only seen one other verified version, and it's over twenty dollars in paperback. All the others claiming to be the 1818 version have been disproved." YES, as far as I can tell, it is. The only preface is Shelley's own original. There is no introduction, no commentary or editorial credits whatsoever. There are no illustrations, and the spelling and language have not been edited. Have a good thesaurus handy. So, here it is, the author's original script, no frills, for a bargain price. Which is exactly what I was looking for.

Do not buy this (October 22, 2017) Kindle edition of Frankenstein. The book is riddled with typographic errors and the wording is off in many places. Some sentences don't flow or even make sense. It appears a bad OCR tool was used to translate the original Frankenstein novel to this bastardization. I had to put down the book since it was simply unreadable. As an alternative, I downloaded the open source version (legally free) from Gutenberg here: http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/84. I'm now reading and enjoying Frankenstein on its 200th anniversary.

A young governess is hired to care for a young girl named Flora and her brother, Miles. Miles has been expelled from a prestigious school and never explains why he has been sent home. Over time, the governess who is the narrator along with the housekeeper, Mrs. Grose believe that the children are in contact and being controlled by the evil Peter Quint, a former resident and Miss Jessel, their former governess. The children have a sweet demeanor but at times their cunning ways are apparent. Will they be successful in extricating the children from these dark forces? Read Henry James’ popular The Turn of the Screw and see how things pan out!
