Book Description

With the advent of liquid modernity, the society of producers is transformed into a society of consumers. In this new consumer society, individuals become simultaneously the promoters of commodities and the commodities they promote. They are, at one and the same time, the merchandise and the marketer, the goods and the travelling salespersons. They all inhabit the same social space that is customarily described by the term lsquo;the marketrsquo;. The test they need to pass in order to acquire the social prizes they covet requires them to recast themselves as products capable of drawing attention to themselves. This subtle and pervasive transformation of consumers into commodities is the most important feature of the society of consumers. It is the hidden truth, the deepest and most closely guarded secret, of the consumer society in which we now live. In this new book Zygmunt Bauman examines the impact of consumerist attitudes and patterns of conduct on various apparently unconnected aspects of social life ndash; politics and democracy, social divisions and stratification, communities and partnerships, identity building, the production and use of knowledge, and value preferences. The invasion and colonization of the web of human relations by the world-views and behavioural patterns inspired and shaped by commodity markets, and the sources of resentment, dissent and occasional resistance to the occupying forces, are the central themes of this brilliant new book by one of the worldrsquo;s most original and insightful social thinkers.

"Consuming Life" by Zygmunt Bauman is a masterful analysis of the commodification of the individual in "liquid modern" (postmodern) society. The powers of observation displayed by the octogenarian author are without peer; Mr. Bauman seems to effortlessly assess myriad facets of contemporary culture while drawing upon a deep theoretical and practical knowledge base of philosophy, economics, politics and sociology. Taken alongside Mr. Bauman's other works in the liquid modern series (including "Liquid Life", "Liquid Love" and "Liquid Fear"), this outstanding book will no doubt further cement the author's reputation as one of the most original, important and insightful thinkers of our time.Mr. Bauman brilliantly compares and contrasts the "society of producers" of what he calls the "solid modern" era with the "society of consumers" of today. Mr. Bauman explains that the values of mass conformity, durability and permanence associated with 20th century Fordist production has been displaced by an individuated 21st century society that is characterized by a continuous search for instant gratification. The author posits that linear progress has given way to a "pointillist" conception of time where the promise of perpetual happiness requires a continuous process of self-reinvention, forgetting and waste disposal. As the marketer's creed of dissatisfaction conditions consumers to keep the treadmill of production in motion, the social skills required to maintain long-lasting interpersonal relationships decline. In fact, the author contends that Internet dating helps to satisfy the growing expectation that relationships can be consumed like packaged commodities and disposed of when desirability has waned.Mr. Bauman finds that whereas sovereign power was once expressed as an obligation to dutifully serve the nation state it is now exemplified by the coercive seductions of the market. Neoliberal ideology encourages individuals to improve themselves for entry into the job market where their subsequent busyness and acquisitiveness provides a false sense of living full and satisfying lives. In this manner, Mr. Bauman explains that individuals are at once both commodities and the consumers of commodities. The illusion of freedom offered by the marketplace to choose from among the latest styles obscures the loss of working class political power. Indeed, the author shows how the state is no longer concerned with ensuring the welfare of all citizens and is instead preoccupied with law enforcement, and especially with the disposition of the criminally defective underclass who comprise the "collateral casualties" of consumer society.Mr. Bauman goes on to explore these and related concepts with consummate skill and erudition throughout all 150 pages of this fascinating text. I highly recommend this noteworthy book to all readers who are interested in a thought-provoking and unique perspective on contemporary society.

This book offers one of the clearest, most straightforward analyses of consumerism. If I had to recommend a single book on consumerism, this would be it.

For me this book was a long unbroken series of statements, all of which take the premise of the book for granted. Particularly discouraging to me was the writer's inclusion of a vast number of quotations, studies and articles cited, without any context given for the original work. This seems half a book, or the beginning of a conversation. All possible arguments to support one idea have been gathered. Left undone is the recognition of any other opinion, conclusion or analysis. An example: in the first several pages, Bauman takes on the ubiquitous social media and its concomitant electronic devices. He discusses only the ways in which these technologies create shallow dependent consumers. There are other opinions, really! A few years later, Clay Shirky, for example, carefully developed an analysis suggesting that the internet and its related media are changing consumers of information into producers of information, exactly the opposite of Bauman's stance. Bauman describes the same phenomena not with analysis, but with bias.As the parent of four children, it's been interesting to note their relative enmeshment in social media. However, the child who eschewed social media entirely has by no means experienced "social death," as Bauman posits. Bauman seems to be confusing the popular crowd as the only possible satisfying social unit. These points are overly detailed, but such objections sprang to my mind on every page, from start to finish. If you're looking for a name-dropping rant, buy this book. For more reasoned reporting and analysis, look elsewhere.

Review

"Required reading.  This astounding book has a real shot of changing the conversation on race in America. If you're white and have a kid (or have ever been a kid), please read this book." ~ Saira Rao, Co-Founder, In This Together Media"Buy this book for yourself, for your children's teachers, for all parents and grandparents of white children who you know. Raising White Kids is both an antidote to the racial ignorance and fear most white families unknowingly pass along to their young and a powerful way to call white adults into the process of racial awakening in the name of creating more just and functional communities for all." ~ Debby Irving, author Waking Up White, and Finding Myself in the Story of Race"Finally! Jennifer Harvey provides a long-awaited and much-needed answer to a question often posed by white antiracist allies: How do we raise our children to be allies in the struggle against racism? Raising White Kids provides practical advice and examples for parents that are well-grounded in the scholarship on racial identity and racial socialization. It would be a mistake, however, to think that this book is only for parents of white children. It is a critical resource for educators whose efforts to teach about racial oppression are routinely hampered by the wide knowledge gap between white students and students of color. Harvey helps faculty to understand why white students often need intense remediation around issues of race and racism, and provides both faculty and students with language and tools to grapple with the cultural shock that comes with learning about racism for the first time." ~ Chanequa Walker-Barnes, author Too Heavy a Yoke: Black Women and the Burden of Strength"Jennifer Harvey's brilliant work and passion for racial justice comes alive on every page. Raising White Kids is a theory-rich, practical guide with wonderfully helpful examples that will equip parents to navigate today's racial challenges with confidence and grace.  For the millions of mothers and fathers who are deeply invested in creating a better tomorrow in an increasingly multi-cultural America, Harvey's book couldn't be more helpful or more needed right now." ~ Diana Butler Bass, author of Grounded: Finding God in the World--A Spiritual Revolution"Jennifer Harvey's Dear White Christians was a wakeup call to white congregations whose good intentions were often undermined by their own blind spots. With Raising White Kids, Harvey offers a much-needed roadmap for white parents who realize that racial injustice isn't just a problem for kids of color. This insightful and practical book is a must-read for white parents who want to raise surefooted, self-aware kids in an increasingly diverse America. There are few things more important to the future of our democracy." ~ Robert P. Jones, CEO, PRRI and author of The End of White Christian America.

I am a Trump voting white male Texan. I honestly thought this book would be good for a laugh and as a coffee table "joke" book. I am now ashamed to have had that opinion. As I got into it, I realized this was not some irate crazy liberal finger-wagging at the white man. Instead, it was a really well written, non-political, sensible, well-reasoned and sourced take on an issue that is very important in this day and age, an age that you get labeled a racist for merely admitting you voted for Trump. But this isnt about me or my politics, this is about my little girl. A lot of people maybe have the mistaken belief that Texas is a bunch of white redneck racist hicks. That is true....in some very rural areas. For most of us, we live in extremely diverse areas. This is especially true in the South (where I am) and although this isnt scientific, I believe white americans are the minority here in favor of latinos/as. So the question addressed in the book has real application for me; my child is going to be in school with a lot of darker-skinned "minority" children. I honestly had no idea, prior to reading the book, how best to raise my white kid with respect to race. I would of assumed, wrongly, that you should either ignore it or just make it clear you need to be "color blind." The author has persuaded me thoroughly that, not only is this wrong, it actually may be detrimental to my child. Instead, the author in a very skilled, clear and illustrative manner explains how you should instead confront race head on when instructing your child. If we do not, the author suggests and I believe, we permit our child to tone us out in favor of their own associations and beliefs. (associations and beliefs that will likely be at best racially ignorant and at worst outright racist) At one point, I think quoting another author, she talks about race and likens it to "smog" suggesting it is all around us, everywhere and our simply choosing to disregard it (colorblind) is not only ineffective but harmful. It's a kind of cognitive dissonance. Our children arent so stupid as to believe us when we tell them to ignore race, or to be colorblind, but they also arent smart enough to really appreciate the abstract concepts about equality that we adults do. Instead, they need age-appropriate instruction from their parents and teachers that acknowledges race in a positive and respectful manner. This book does a fantastic job at describing how you can get started down that road. I want my child to forge enduring relationships with people of other races and not to lose out on what those relationships have to offer and the beautiful world around us full of diverse people. Although I was raised much differently, and my parents even more so, our children shouldnt be segregated off with their own for no other reason than we were too ignorant to approach race in a sensible, real way. I am persuaded that will be the result if I were to teach my child to be "colorblind" and to ignore race. Thank you Dr. Harvey and Im sorry for my stupid pre-concieved notions about what I thought this book might be. It is really a wonderful book and I hope others will give it a chance.

Kids spend a great deal of time in school; so raising them is the province, not just of parents, but of teachers as well. In my 20-plus years of teaching, I have seen so many of the truths that Jennifer Harvey communicates in Raising White Kids born out. Her examples and practical suggestions for engaging white kids on the subject of racial injustice make this work unique and help allay some of the helplessness felt by those who wish they could do something but don’t know what to do. I highly recommend it to anyone who works with children and young adults.Harvey’s work resonated with me because of my own experience as an educator. For the past two years I have been involved with organizing speaker symposiums and advisory times (in conjunction with a student cohort) at the Christian, affluent, predominantly white high school where I teach. The student and faculty cohort chose to address the topics of race and then privilege for the first two symposiums. Some valuable and much-needed conversation and connections came about as a result. However, in spite of our attempts to equip students with knowledge and examples of productive action, we experienced a significant degree of backlash from parents whose concerns included wanting to know why their children were being made “to feel bad” about being white. Some students, while convinced of our need to have such discussions, expressed trepidation at how their peers would respond. In the absence of much groundwork being laid regarding what it is to be Christian and white in a racially unjust America, a growing awareness of racial tension manifests itself as “anxiety, guilt, cognitive dissonance, or even anger when race does come up” (Harvey, 10). I have witnessed all of these reactions. There are a multitude of reasons that both parents and students are uncomfortable with such conversations, but parental anxiety often stems from fear and a desire to protect. We want to shield kids from heartbreak, but they will be heartbroken. It’s part of being human. We should want for them to be made whole, more fully human. As Harvey says, “white supremacy malforms my humanity, constrains my life, compromises my spirit” (119). Knowing that heartbreak is inevitable, what would we have break our children’s hearts? Shallow self-interest or a painful empathy that springs from the ability to recognize human dignity and injustice? In Raising White Kids Harvey moves beyond theory to offer realistic advice about how to appropriately talk about and model racial engagement with children and young adults. It’s a tool that will greatly benefit those who read it and those they impact.

I realized early in this book that I am at a very early stage in my personal development, and I need to work on myself before I can have any hope of helping raise my grandkid. Thanks for all the information, as difficult as it was for me to accept some of it.

I’m privileged to continue to learn from Dr. Harvey long after graduating from her courses. And, I need these words, this wisdom, and these strategies now more than ever. As a teacher and mother, I have tools to help my kids at school and kids at home become healthier. I have tools to help them connect history to what exists today. I have tools to encourage meaningful, powerful, and necessary conversations about race. I am grateful for this work and recommend it to everyone I can.

I cannot fully express to Jennifer Harvey my gratefulness for the immense gift of Raising White Children. I chose this book for our school equity committee reading club for its gentle spirit, practical guidance, and careful attention to the complicated dynamics of raising race-conscious white children in an increasingly racially isolated society. Her book is a gift and a joy. It instills tool and guidance through examples and conversations, psychological analysis, and social theory. It is not heady or dumb-downed. For parents who fear guilt or shame - dive in! Harvey is a compassionate and wise teacher. I wish that every parent could go home from an adoption center or hospital with this book in tow. The parents in our study group concur.

My daughter loves these books!

I'm a teacher, and I use these books to write animal reports with my 1st and 2nd grade students. Each animal has a two or four page spread with an average of 12 facts. The text is large so even my students can try reading the facts. After I read about one animal I ask my students what they remember about the animal. Then we decide what to write. I take suggestions from the students and we write two to six sentences about the animal. I keep the writing to just what we learned from the reading and not prior knowledge. I use paper that allows the students to draw a picture and write on lines below. I do a directed drawing to guide them. We select animals with a theme such as, the ocean, African, and forest animals. I usually pick five to six animals to write about per theme. We do a simple intro page where we list all the animals and where they live. We staple all the pages together with a cover page that I create with bubble letters such as, My Ocean Animal Report. Since the students helped come up with every sentence, they can read all the pages. They love the final results.

This is a fabulous book for young kids! The pages have many stunning and large photos of a good variety of animals. The book is broken up into sections like Desert, Forest, Ocean, etc. What is nice about these sections is that they don't all stick with the "typical" animals commonly classified with each time of habitat. An example is tigers being in the forest section. This shows children that there are other types of forests as opposed to just the American and Canadian types they may be familiar with. Each animal has a section about 2-4 pages long. These pages have very short and simple facts, and big, colorful images. It's short and sweet, but still captivating. There are also plenty of images of cute baby animals, which are always fun to look at!Another great thing about this book is that it actually has a Parent Tips section with small activities to do with kids based on the animals in the book, and each one works with a different skill. They're all very simple to do, and some are more fun than educational, but fun and education should go hand in hand with kids to keep them interested. There is also a map with names of the animals labelled in each country.Overall, this is an excellent beginner's book. It's not super detailed, but there are enough facts in there for a young child to retain, and with over 100 pages, that's a relief for parents who end up reading the whole thing to their kids in one sitting like I just did.

I bought this for my 3 year old, but my 5 year old likes it too! It includes a lot of common animals you would expect to find in a kids’ animal book (giraffes, lions, tigers, penguins, polar bears, etc) but also a few animals I didn’t expect (desert jerboa, garden spider, meerkats, thorny lizard, a few ocean animals). For many animals, pictures of both babies and adults are shown which my 3 yo loves. Most animals have 4 pages devoted to them but some only have a 2-page spread. Animals are grouped by habitat (desert animals, grassland animals, etc).My 3 yo doesn’t have the attention span to listen to me read all the text, but we name each animal and I read a few interesting facts for him. Kids ages 5-6 or older would probably listen to or read all the text if they were interested in animals.

We love the 'First Big Book' series of National Geographic. I have already purchased the remaining of the series and my kids (2 and 4 years old) love them a lot. This is the latest edition to the series and is no exception.Like the other books in this series, they are hard cover books containing over 100 pages. (This one is 128 pages) Although it looks like a preschooler book, it is written in a very professional way (similar topics are organized in 8 different chapters and it has a detailed introduction with information on how to use as well as an index at the end.) It rather looks like first big textbook of bugs. However, being organized in a scientific way does not make it complicated for kids since every information is given with either a photo or a schematic diagram to make it easier to understand. Each bug is allocated a few pages and on every page the ratio of pictures to text is 1:1 or greater. The interesting facts (sizes, number of eggs, behaviour etc.) about that particular bug is given on the first page with an informative picture that is accompanying. Then some more information follows with more pictures which could get the kid into the world of that bug.At the end of each chapter there is a game which is like matching the picture of larvae and the adult forms etc. What I like most about these books is that there is no minumum or maximum age for them. My 2 years old likes looking at the pictures and my 4 years old is kind of pictures plus games with a sip of information about the bugs, and I at 31 years old can find many things to learn about the bugs we see arround all the time. The only complaint is the binding quality which does not match the excellence of the paper and image quality. Other books had pages that got loose a few days after purchasing and this shows the signs of the same weakness already. For those who have not owned any books from this series, I can say this is a good book to start with since it is about the organisms we see in our daily life and younger kids would find it more interesting compared to the book about the space or other abstract things.
