This novel is so stunningly beautiful that I can't believe it's the author's first. The writing is absolutely exquisite.I felt the beautiful writing was jarred and interrupted by sex though. It often took me out of the moment the writing had lulled me into. I wish this book hadn't centered around sex, because I wanted so much to love this story. I loved the themes of love and family and culture and history and heartache, but sex was such a dominant part of the story that it overshadowed all of those more tender and subtle themes for me. I was disappointed about that.

I give VERY few Five-Stars to books. If ANY book deserved it, this one does! From the opening words of this novel, I had the inkling that this was to be a book of unusual quality. The cadence, tone, pacing, characters all created a picture of life on a Native American farming allotment in Oklahoma of such vibrence and precision that it was almost a physical experience. This book is beautiful in the way a thunderstorm holds beauty in its fierceness or in the way a heavy rain can transform a newly-tilled field into an art work of erosion – amazing to behold, difficult to witness. It is the kind of book that will make the next book read to be dull and colorless, regardless of how good that book may be. Maud Nail, direct descendent of those who walked The Trail of Tears from Georgia to Oklahoma, lives with her brother, Lovely, and her father, Mustard (so named because of his temper) on her deceased mother’s allotment. Her extended family live on the surrounding land – all making a living out of the dusty, rich soil given to them in exchange for homes taken from them. Her steady, routine life is forever changed when someone takes an axe to one of the family’s cows. That act of senseless violence sets off a chain of events so dynamic in their impact that Maud is left feeling like an unwelcomed stranger on her own land. Those feelings of detachment are only intensified when a handsome peddler (Booker) drives up with his wagon-full of wares covered in striking blue canvas. Maud loves her farm and her family. She attends to her daily chores without delay or rancor, helps with the farming that will bring what little cash can be had in that part of the world and visits her relatives when time and work allow for such enjoyments. The death of Betty (the cow) is a point of focus of just how small her life really is.The response to this attack on the family and its’ livelihood is expectedly harsh and coincides with the feelings of love she is beginning to have for one outside of her clan. Both occasions are moments of change for Maud. Protecting her family, she knows, requires sacrifice unasked for but nonetheless expected. The growing love she has for Booker awakens her to the demands such feelings make – honesty, transparency, trust of one not blood-kin. In response to each of these moments, Maud takes action; she makes one situation far worse for those she hoped to protect, she acts in the other in a manner that is new for her but one that will lead her further from the certainty she once held in ease. The reader is follows Maud as she goes about living her life in a time of change for her. The riches Oklahoma is experiencing has a feeling of permanence – the oilfields are making everyone connected with them wealthy, farmers are having bumper crops of corn and wheat with a ready market, the Creek and Cherokee nations, exiled to a foreign land, are accomplishing to live on their own. The love Maud learned in her home and within her community is expanding in ways that are new but seem natural and she learns that it is very good. She is wanted by two desirable men who are near opposites, one offers the “future,” the other offers the stability of what she already knows. Maud is the representation of the Nation during that age. Hopeful for more, holding to the past. This is a novel written for adults. There is graphic violence and explicit sexual moments that are intentionally shocking as the author used those instances to magnify the conflict within Maud as she “walked her line.” The “Line” is used with multiple meanings: the line between her allotments and those of her neighbors, the line between staying and leaving, the line of definition of who she is apart from others expectations of her and finally the line from which, once crossed, there can be no return. As the book closes Maud ponders, “1927 and 1928 had been terrible years. She felt that no matter what happened, 1929 would be a better one.” (p.282) The last we see of Maud is her crossing into that hopeful year.

Do I feel this was a worthy read? Yes. Did I read it to the end? Yes. The author did a very good job of meshing writing style with the setting and characters. They thought things through slowly, waited patiently for answers to questions. Were people of a few words in environments rather stark and certainly difficult. The author chose to use a short simply put style which suited the novel.Spoiler alert! So the question is, why only 3 stars? I really disliked the animal cruelty at the beginning of the story and really wanted to stop reading as soon as it was described. Horrible, but maybe the author felt it necessary to the story. Still hated it. Second, while empathizing to a point with the main character, I found it difficult to like her. She seemed so self absorbed with her own feelings that she seemed to have little if any sympathy or regard for anyone else, whether Billy, the baby or sometimes her relatives. I thought her final "gift" to Billy hardly a fair exchange for her leaving without a word and the ending unsatisfying. In real life I doubt her marriage would make a year. Sorry, but this book brought out a rather strong opinion. I do however, appreciate having a glimpse into the lives of Native Americans in Oklahoma during the time period set in the story. I would imagine most people would want to escape those conditions as Maud did.

I got this book because of a review in the Smithsonian. Not what I expected but a very good presentation of issues of the time. I could see myself in some of this, and others I know, and we are 70 years later. The story caused a lot of reflection, and gave me a better understanding of how it was for my parents and the people of their time.

I don't think I have ever read about a character that I liked quite as much as Maud. She is from a totally different culture with a different view of life from my own and yet totally believable. Her connection with extended family was so deeply different from my own experience and still felt absolutely authentic. She is so practical and capable and yet yearns for a different life, a better life. Her curiosity, imagination and yearning are tangible. Maud's passion and sexuality took me by surprise. I'd love to walk down the line and sit on the porch with her but I'm afraid she'd only tell me lies. I do so hope there will be a sequel. How will she cope with the events 1929 will bring? It will be in her own unique way I'm sure.

Well worth my time. Good character development and engaging story telling. My only complaint was the last few chapters had way too much graphic sex--it almost felt as though someone else wrote that section of the book. My only thought on this was perhaps Maud's depression caused her sexual addiction? Anyway, I still thimk the story was very interesting. The last couple chapters made the book inappropriate for young teens which is too bad as the indian story was really informative. I would suggest A Cup of Dust by Susie Finkbeiner for the young teen. Its about the dust bowl. I did enjoy Maud's Line very much though and will read more of her work.

Like all of Pratchett's DISCWORLD books, LORDS AND LADIES is highly entertaining and amazingly well written. Some of the books in the series would have benefited from more editing, but not this one. It moves along quite well, never lags, and best of all--has Granny Weatherwax in it! The other issue I've noticed in Pratchett's writing is that he can be a little esoteric on occasion, and confounding on others. I'm sure HE knew what he meant, but I doubt many others would. Apart from this, he remains one of my all-time favorite writers. His voice and style are unique and very enjoyable, and his stories are wonderfully told.

Lords and Ladies is the third Discworld novel to follow the goings-on of Lancre's coven of witches—Granny Weatherwax, Nanny Ogg, and Magrat Garlick (Granny also makes an appearance in the early Equal Rites). It is also the first Discworld book that is probably best tackled after having read at least some of the previous books in the series (I would recommend at the very least reading Wyrd Sisters and Witches Abroad to get some of the necessary background for the current story's primary players, and familiarity with some of the earlier stories following the faculty of the Unseen University, mainly Moving Pictures and Reaper Man, might be helpful as well).Where previous Discworld novels following the witches have riffed on Shakespeare and fairy tales, Lords and Ladies takes on elves, offering an amusing mash-up of stock fantasy-fiction elves with their more malevolent folktale origins, though other references get cameos as well, including Shakespeare's Midsummer Night's Dream, the Jane's Information Group military publications, and Schrödinger's cat.Pratchett's storytelling remains superb for this 14th entry in the Discworld series and even what at first appears to be a somewhat deus-ex-machina ending turns out to something a bit more interesting. Lords and Ladies should be a delight for all Discworld fans (and particularly for those who, like me, have a fondness for the Lancre witches), though it may not be the best place for someone new to the series to start.

Terry Pratchett is simply the master of the fantasy novel. His prose is very readable, while not being simplistic at all.The true genius of Pratchett lies in his masterful ability to parody modern socio-political environments and intertwine them with fairytale settings, all with his own unique twist and believable, relate able characters. While this book lands quite a ways along in his extensive saga or Discworld books, like all Pratchett novels, it can be read as a stand-alone with ease, due to the footnotes and the explanations in the book.

Another Terry Pratchett wonderfully creative escape from the serious world! If you are already a fan, it is especially enjoyable, featuring many of the regulars from previous novels. It could even be described as a romance novel-sort of. Then again....the librarian as best man for Magrat's wedding? To understand the last sentence, read at least a half dozen previous novels. You will be glad you did.

Pratchett was off his game with this one. While it had a number of quirky observations and some fun language play the make all of his novels so popular, the author introduced a number of potential major characters only to strand them in early chapters and didn't bother to tie up a lot of narrative threads he started. If this were one of his earlier novels, his career might have ended much more quickly.Pick another by Mr. Pratchett.

I've fallen in love with Terry Pratchett a long time ago - I've read multiple times all his first couple dozen novels and I own several autographed copies, to be clear - and I think I'd probably give 5 stars to everything he ever wrote (with the possible exception of his output as a press agent for a British nuclear facility whose name currently escapes me).Still, there's 5 stars and then there's 5 stars, and L&L is one of the finest 5 stars of all. While it might not be as side-splittingly funny as, say, Witches Abroad, nor quite as surreptitiously profound as Interesting Times (both of which are paragons of Pratchettism, in my opinion), L&L is both funny and deep, and I think it wouldn't take much effort to see a lot of what's going on today somehow hinted at or implied in it.One last word: if you're new to Discworld, I don't think this should be the first novel you read. While it's true that the Discworld is not as chronologically strict as other series, and it's certainly true you can read the different "subseries" without reading the others (mostly), by doing so you'd miss the awesome, if only partly deliberate, job Pratchett has done in letting his characters grow and change and evolve. You owe it to yourself to enjoy his work as much as possible, right?

I am a dyed in the wool Terry Pratchett fan and in my opinion this is one of his best stories. At a philosophical level it is about power, the use and abuse of it. But the characters are so amazing, even those that don't play the central roles. Pratchett weaves a rich and colourful tapestry of people across whose lives the story plays out. The three witches Granny Weatherwax, Nanny Ogg and Magrat Garlick each shine in their own unique way. Its a rollicking magical rollercoaster ride in true Discworld style. Highly recommended!

The three witches of Lacre return home from Witches Abroad and find changes a foot. New, young, hip witches are going around and calling forth the 'Fairy Folk', the local actors guild are preparing for a wedding play, and Magrat decided to stop being a witch.Over all, one of the strongest Discworld series. I love Nanny Ogg and Granny, and this time wizards are coming to much things up too.

Hidden Wings is one of those books that I've been meaning to read for quite some time. It's a few years old now, and I've heard some pretty great things about it.From page one, I was able to delve right into the story... Emma is a seventeen-year-old girl who very recently lost her parents and is now being sent to Alaska to live with an aunt that she's never met. We meet Emma along with her two best friends Lia and Jeremy. It's obvious from the start that these three are excellent friends who have a pretty great bond. I love romance in my stories, but second to that, I love friendships that make you feel like they're as close as family.Once Emma's new life in Alaska begins we're introduced to a whole new slew of characters. But we don't get a chance to really know them before Emma is thrown into some crazy situations. Bit by bit, we learn more about Emma and her new "family".All in all the writing was intriguing and captivating. I wasn't bored at any point in the story. The only thing I'm disappointed in is that I don't feel like I got to know some of the characters as well as I would have liked, but I think that's because this is a series and with each book more will be revealed.Renae weaves a romantic tale of supernatural beings and a girl's purpose in a world she's just learning exists.I will be reading the next installment.

Emma wakes up with no memory of her accident, and has a stranger in her room telling her that her family is dead, and that she is the sole survivor. How's that for a happy 17th? Emma is immediately "escorted" to Alaska to live with her Aunt that she has never met. On top of all this, things are trying to kill her and she's never heard of anything like it!Emma is a very likable character, and there is Kade... oh dear sweet Kade. I know who I am calling if I ever need an escort! I really enjoyed the banter with Emma and her friends, I do hope that they made appearances in the next story! This girl hits her head a lot, and I mean a LOT! That was a little tiring, no wonder she has no memory of the accident. She gets knocked over and out more times than I can even count!I absolutely love the way that Cameo Renae grabs your attention from page one until the very last word. I am always ready to devour the next book!Just when you think everything is all nice and neat, wrapped up just so.... she throws this expert curveball at you and there you are!~Dowie

I had read this book before, but didn't read the rest of the series. I just got the rest of the books so I went back to read this first one again and remembered how much I really liked it.This is a story about Emma. She loses her parents and moves to Alaska to live with an aunt she didn't know exisited. An "escort" is sent to take her Alaska, his name is Kade and there are instant sparks between Kade and Emma. Kade is one of six brothers that live with her aunt, along with Caleb and Courtney who are brother and sister who are taken in by her aunt after their mom dies.Emma thinks she is just a normal girl, but she is anything but. The action starts from the very beginning with Emma being attacked and she has no idea why. The story unfolds pretty quickly, with Emma finding out what she really is, who the brothers are and even who her aunt really is. It's a great story about light and dark and you get so into the story, you reach the end before you know it. Really excited to read the rest of the books in this series.

I have previously read this book but never finished the series (which after I am rereading I am regretting that I didn’t continue sooner) After Emma’s accident which claimed the life of her parents she is then thrust into a world she never would have guessed existed, much less she would be a vital part of. After she is moved to live with her aunt in Alaska she starts questioning what is going on with her new home, and the strange pull she feels towards her new guardian. Come to find out she is inhuman and her very existence is being threatened by the Fallen and darklings. They are constantly battling and fighting just to survive throughout the story. Cameo really keeps you sucked into this beautiful world she created. It’s a very emotional ride all the way till the end… just when you think everything will work out as planned Cameo throws an excellent twist in the story leaving you begging to find out what happens next.

Finished the book in half a day! That’s how glued I was... great audio by the way! Love the world the author has created and the characters are fun and sound to be all hot and very angelic. Emma has a accident where she loses her parents and her world has changed from there. There are unexplained events and she wants to know what it means to her and finds out that she is inhuman. An escort is assigned to her to deliver her to her new destination and she is suddenly attached to her escort and doesn’t know why the pull is there. They are always fighting to survive and soon they are all trapped and that where there is a cliffhanger. I definitely and honestly recommend this story! I can’t wait for the next installment.

Rating: 3.5 starsThe first part of the book is a 3-star. The last quarter of the book is 4-star.I enjoyed Hidden Wings. There is a lot of action and suspense, along with a few surprises.Hidden Wings is a YA Paranormal Romance with Angels and Demons...and of course some normal people and not so normal things thrown in. This is the beginning of the romance between Emma and Kade (which since I'd read book 5 before reading book 1, I already knew about). Good versus evil and a prophecy of a Nephilim child.Prepare to cry. The story begins with Emma losing her parents in a car crash. Her guardianship is taken over by a relative that she has never even heard of, let alone met. Emma is plucked from her normal life and delivered to Alaska where she discovers that the world she once knew was a lie, a shadow, and there are monsters lurking. The book didn't grab me the way ARV-3 did, but it was a pretty good story. I was surprised by the cliffhanger though...which made me want to pick up book 2 immediately.
