Ryuichi Kaneko is the leading historian of Japanese photobooks. As the former curator at the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography, he oversaw the development of the institutionÂ’s collection. Over the past 45 years Kaneko has amassed a formidable private collection of more than twenty thousand volumes, magazines and catalogues. As a scholar, he has been an important advocate in supporting the scholarship and study of Japanese photography and photobooks.Manfred Heiting is a designer and editor of photo publications and a collector of photobooks focusing on the period between 1886 and 1980. This survey considers 511 books starting with the funeral of the Meiji Emperor published in 1912 containing eighty-two photos by Ogawa Kazumasa. Before this printing techniques were still being developed and many books of photos existed as single unbound pages.The book's twenty chapters examine Japanese photography as revealed in photobooks with a detailed look at specific historical highlights, for example: propaganda 1930-1944; the German influence; Leica camera 1937-1939; protest books 1960-1978; underground 1968-1978. The chapter on Manchukuo 1932-1942 (after 1945 Manchuria) has some fascinating picture books showing new developments with buildings, industry and agriculture which Japan hoped, with overseas distribution, would be the fastest way for international recognition for the country they invaded.Japan and Germany signed an Anti-Comintern Pact in 1936 (essentially to contain the Soviet Union) and this produced a rather intriguing collection of photobooks about the 1936 Olympic Games, Bauhaus design, the small hand-held Leica (ten books are featured) and of course WW2. The Japanese military produced a visually exciting propaganda magazine called 'Front' (with design inspiration from the famous 'USSR in construction') there are forty spreads in the book showing an amazing use of photos and design. Page 228 shows Hitler's 'Mein kampf' published in Japanese with photos by Heinrich Hoffmann (which were absent from the German editions).An unusual chapter 'The photocopy photobook' shows several 'books' of photos run-off in the seventies from Araki Nobuyoshi and others using lightweight CH paper with stapled sheets and in short editions that exploited the reduced grey tones of the Xerox copier. The longest chapter, over seventy-three pages, looks at photobook series from 1909 to 1982, this seems an area of publishing that is almost unique to Japan with books published as a visual record of the countries culture and development over the decades. There are three chapters without a specific title other than 'Book selection' 1945-1959, 1960-1975 and 1976-1990. It's a chance to display the cover and inside spreads from a choice of worthwhile photo titles.As with the Soviet photobook I mentioned this Japanese edition is a handsome looking production, the 3500 covers and spreads all have a slight drop shadow with printing using a 175 screen. I am so sad to say that this edition has been cut and bowdlerized. Do not purchase. It leaves half the story out and it is the half of the story that builds suspense. Mike agrees to dig the cellar in one day or not get paid. This part is extremely important. Yet, it has been cut completely out of the book! Several other sentences and whole pages were cut as well. And the "redemption" of the greedy selectman, Henry B. Swap, has also been cut. Sadly, I bought it in the fall, but since my child had so many new books for birthday and Christmas we are just getting to it now, or else I would $6 back.

I am a huge Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel book. I remember it as a child, raised all my children reading it and now on a grandchild. After he destroyed the hardback I thought I'd be smart and order the board book. GUESS WHAT! THE BOARD BOOKS HAVE BEEN EDITED!!! Much of the rhythm of this wonderful children's book has been removed! UGH! I've contacted the publisher hoping it was just an error in printing. Nope, that's the way they've formatted it. I'm returning because it's not the true Mike Mulligan and Mary Ann book.

My mother was a frequent visitor to used book stores while we were growing up (when you have ten children, you learn to live life in thrifty ways) and, when I saw Mike Mulligan on Amazon's list of 100 Children's Books to Read in a Lifetime, it brought back memories of reading a battered copy of this book to my younger brothers (which always seemed to inspire them to gather their old Tonka trucks and head outside for some excavating of their own!) I'd mentioned to my dad (born the year before the Great Depression ended in 1939, the year this book was first published) that I'd just purchased the 75th anniversary edition of Mike Mulligan for my grandkids and - even though he was stricken with Alzheimer's years ago, it brought an instant smile of recognition... this was a book he remembered from his childhood as well!As soon as you open this book, the old-fashioned illustrations take you back to what was a simpler time, but also an extremely stressful time - the end of the longest and most far-reaching economic downturn in our nation's history (at its lowest point, 13-15 million Americans were out of work, close to half of the banks had failed, a time when bread lines and soup kitchens were the norm, with foreclosures and repossessions leading to rising numbers of homeless as people lost their jobs - just as Mike Mulligan and his steam shovel named Mary Anne do, as steam shovels are quickly being replaced by power shovels. The deep hole Mike and Mary Anne find themselves in with no way out feels reflective of that period. It was a time when loyalty, trust, faith and ingenuity was about all you had to get by on, and the deep friendship between Mike and Mary Anne is a perfect example of that. 1939 was the year American industry shifted into high gear with WW II, when pulling together to support the troops was everything, including re-purposing of various items for new usages... just as Mary Anne becomes re-purposed as a furnace for a new town hall, for which Mike becomes the janitor - still together through it all. It was interesting to discover that Mary Anne's name was based on the Marion, Ohio's Marion Steam Shovel Company, re-named the Marion Power Shovel Company after the change from steam to diesel power within the industry had taken hold. (Sadly, after being sold, spun off, and then integrated into the product line of a long time rival, the Marion facility was closed.)This 75th Anniversary edition is a beautiful book (with instructions on how to download a free audiobook on the first page)... some of the pages are pretty wordy, so I don't know that it would hold the attention of a 2 year old, but I think our 4-1/2 year old grandson will do fine with it - the words are very simple, and are displayed in interesting configurations (many of the pages have the lines of words in a slanted fashion, which sort of reminds me of a big load of words Mary Anne might lift!), and though the imprinted $17.99 price on the cover seems a bit hefty for a 44-page book, this is one of the true classics (which the National Education Association places among the "Teachers' Top 100 Books") - one we'll be happy to place into the hands of our grandchildren. My favorite thing about the story is the sense of dignity and respect with which Mike and Mary Anne are treated in the end, after all of their years of hard work. If only all American workers could look forward to the same treatment!

This was a childhood favorite of my brothers, so I purchased it a while ago for his children. It has been read over and over and delightfully received. My brother and his family visited recently and I had the opportunity to read it to the children. What a delight! It's still as good and evoked just as much wonder in them as I remember when I was a child. Great timeless children's book. Beautiful, hand drawn illustrations. Love it!

Classic children's story book. My mother read it to my brother and me as kids, I read it to my kids and I just bought it (along with several other classics) for my brother's grandson for Christmas. I know he will love it - and it will bring back fond memories to my brother as well.

BEAUTIFUL BOOK!! I remember listening to Captain Kangaroo read this book on his tv show and the pictures showing on the screen. It still makes me smile. We purchased this book as a Christmas Gift for my grandson. He will enjoy it for years to come. My son was thrilled that we found it (really is it that hard to find anything you want on Amazon, I think not) and is ready to start reading. It's a lovely story with a sweet ending. A good old fashioned story book. I can't see how it could disappoint anyone.

Present for one of my pregnant friends with young children. I read it to my three children (adults now), and they loved it then. I read it when I was a kid back in the 1950's. The story is never old, even tho it deals with a steam shovel. It's friendship and loyalty that comes thru to the end. Excellent traits to instill in little ones at an impressionable time of their lives!

I ordered Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel for my 15 month old who is fascinated with diggers. The story is so sweet and follows the life of a steam shovel, Mary Ann, and her operator Mike. When steam shovels are replaced with newly invented diesel engine shovels, etc, the pair has to find a new home. A great story about perseverance and re-purposing outdated machinery instead of junking it. There are a lot of words, so I would say this book is best for an older age group..maybe 4-5 and up. That being said, my little person does on occasion sit through this entire story.

Of all the physical manifestations of quantum physics what jarred me the most were related to energy creation and global warming. The most important problem for us to solve is outlined in this book. This should be a must read for every high school chemistry student with the hope that a few will be encouraged enough to want to be part of the team to help turn our current course around.

It is an entertaining introduction to quantum physics with the adequate amount of background and physics history. It is easily understandable up to a certain point for persons that are not familiar with physics. At some point the explanaitions do get a bit complicated and involve concepts that are not self-evident and might require additional reading to be fully understood.The book is constructed in a way that you will be able to understand the general concept even if you do not fully understand all the details.

Ok so I have zero background in physics or Math. I'm 40 and pretty high up in the technology field so I'm a pretty smart man. I wanted to learn more about Quantum Physics and decided to get this book. I'm still reading it but as of now I would say that anyone that doesn't have a general background into Classical Physics should start their first. For the most part this book isn't too terribly hard to follow but as with most subjects as diverse as this there's just too much information to cover in the short chapters. This book will give you a general overview of things but no real in-depth insight. The first chapter goes through the units of measure used frequently throughout the book and if you have a hard time grasping those concepts (as I did) you are going to feel lost quite a bit in the later chapters. I've found over the years that most people who do understand these subjects have no clue how to translate that knowledge to the average person. If you're like me and you want a more detailed understanding of things from the bottom up you'll want do a little more research. I give the book a great rating but I would strongly recommend that if you are truly a beginner in the world of physics that you start with classical physics first and then step into the realm of Quantum Physics. If you already have a good understanding of things like gravity, magnetism, and electricity and are looking for a good starting point for quantum physics then this isn't a bad starting point.

A bit too rich for beginners, but still nice explanations. Needs to read two or three times. Great book.

Great book, have to have a working knowledge of mathematics

I enjoyed this book. It is written in a style that is quite easily readable (if you already have some working knowledge and fluency in physics), and Alistair Rae provides some very amusing anecdotes about the physicists he speaks of. I felt that the author skipped around a lot, especially in his explanation of the standard model, and I had to repeatedly go back and review to make sense of some threads of thought. However, one big plus is the questions that Rae provides at the back of the book, which helped me check my understanding. Overall this book was well worth reading, but don't expect this single book to suffice as an overview of quantum physics.

This is one of the many books with which I tried unsuccessfully to understand and learn Quantum Mechanics.Finally I succeeded with L. Susskind's book.

Overall, I definitely got what I wanted out of this book. For those of you who want a mathy approach to the subject, this is probably not the book for you. I know very little about the subject, so I wanted a book that would enable me to get a big picture so I could tell if a certain aspect of quantum physics interests me. This book serves that function well.No direct reflection on the author, but there are a number of significant numerical errors in the first chapter or so. They are almost certainly due to poor typesetting, I'm sure the author can tear up the math.

kids love this book; it is an excellent choice for any elementary age kid. Hope the author writes a lot more books about Og.

Love the Humphrey books and was excited to read the Og spinoff. It’s good but just doesn’t have quite the same charm and fun as the books featuring Humphrey. Doesn’t read as well and just not our favorite. Would prefer more Humphrey adventures.

I love this writers books. These books keep me and my children reading and learning.

If you love reading the stories about Humphrey, you will love to hear them from Og’s point of view! My 8 year old son and I LOVED this!

When Og the Frog comes to Room 26 because of an unruly neighbor, he is skeptical of his new "home". Og misses his friends back at the swamp but, he also remembers the many dangers of the swamp. He isn't used to noise and his new environment. However, he likes that he has a lot of time and ideas for his favorite pastimes. Og realizes that he has an impact on his fellow classmates. But, when he realizes that they are thinking of sending him back to the pond, he can't help to feel betrayed. Will Og be sent back to his pond?The book was a fun and endearing read. Og gave young readers an idea what it is like being a frog, especially, in new situations and environments. I like that it included facts about hamsters, frogs, and information about nature. It teaches readers about compassion, sympathy, and the value of friendship. I think it is the perfect book for any frog lover!

This book is amazing! It introduces really good points to consider about a classroom pet and then has substantial discussions about them. So well done! Where did the pet come from? Should we return it to the wild? Do I want to feed a pet a live animal? It even talks about diseases these pets can have. And all of this is done in a fun to read manner.
