I'm an old scout who suddenly finds himself being asked to be a scoutmaster. I have a year to intern under the departing scoutmaster but I have found that there is a world of difference between being a happy go lucky scout and being an adult leader. I've taken the training and read what BSA has to offer but I felt like I was just skimming the surface of what I need to know. This book goes into detail, giving you background, ideas and potential pitfalls to most a leader will encounter. It also is full of ideas on what to do. I can't recommend this book enough.P.S. I've been bringing up many of the ideas in this book and my troop committee thinks I'm better than I really am.

This has a hundred great tips for Scout leaders (not just the Scoutmaster). I'm an ASM and it's given me lots of new ideas about how to get our troop moving better and more-efficiently, as well as growing and having more fun.I've finished reading it once, now I'm about to re-read and create a ToDo list from it.The only thing I think would improve it would be more links to website references. There are a number in this edition, but a new edition should have more.

Bought this for our Scouts. Was told it was just okay, but didn't augment the Council's program as much as they thought it would.

As a long time Scouter but new Scoutmaster, this book was recommended to me by a great friend. I've read it cover to cover a couple of times now and gave encorporated many of his ideas and recommendations. If you are a new Scoutmaster or an old Scoutmaster looking for some fresh ideas, this book is for you.

Here's my quick review of this book:Overall, I found this book to be very well written. Mr. Ray provides tons of information and plenty of examples and bullet points to support his experiences and research. At the end of each chapter he also provides resources to much of his information.Although I am not our Troop's Scoutmaster yet, I plan to reference this book plenty in the next few years. Furthermore, when I think about it a little bit deeper, our Troop has probably done many of the things mentioned in this book. Mr. Ray has found a medium to expand upon those activities and ideas in an attempt to keep our young leaders interested in the Scouting movement for years to come. And, he gives both the Senior Patrol Leader (SPL) and the Scoutmaster another tool to use in which to do it.Although this is not an official BSA publication, I would recommend this book to anyone who is considering becoming a Scoutmaster of a Troop, large or small.

Eh its OK. Nice to have another perspective but honestly the program materials from the BSA are more valuable.

As a new scoutmaster, this book was a great tool to get some new ideas. Generally, scoutmaster's come and go with their kids through their years of scouting. There's no reason to re-invent the wheel whenever a new scoutmaster comes along. This book was full of advice from an experienced scoutmaster and I found it very useful. Also took a bit of the stress out of taking over the scoutmaster position. Thanks.

As a current Assistant Scoutmaster and soon-to-be Troop Committee Chair, with extensive experience as a Cub Scout leader, I've learned a lot from this book. It really is a great handbook and gives you all kinds of information and tips that you won't find in the official Scoutmaster's handbook from BSA. Highly recommended.

As a student, I learned from version 9 of this book. As a first-time linguistics teacher, I used the most current edition, which at this time is 11. They've kept a lot of the fundamentals the same, reorganized some things, and of course updated the content with more contemporary concepts (the most obvious being the section on language and computers). For the first-time teacher, this book is perfect since you can pick and choose from the well-organized sections you want to address in your class. The accompanying exercises are great practice, both for in-class demonstration, and to assign as homework.

This is a rental, so I have to return it, I can honestly say though, if I had the money, this is a book I would LOVE to have in my collection. This book was assigned for a class I have called "Language Foundations," a linguistic class. I may be biased about the book because I have a truly amazing professor who teaches out it, but I really think thats a testament to why she chose this particular book to teach from. It explains language and the elements of it in such a thorough way and I can see this book helping people who want to learn another language besides English, those who struggle with bridging the gap between understanding English rules and speaking it, as well as those wanting to learn English. This is a top notch publication.

This textbook is easy to read because it specifically explains each linguistic term and provides examples. In the end of each chapter, there are exercises and activities that go along with the corresponding chapter. Large book, tough to carry around, but important to have and a keeper for your bookshelf if you are a Linguistics major or any foreign language major. I come from New England, where the dialect and sounds of the accent are very obvious to many people. I am also a French language major. This book helps you understand why people speak the way they speak, citing examples all throughout the USA so that one can understand and relate it to other world languages.

I teach linguistics and, therefore, have reviewed many linguistics textbooks. This one is by far the most comprehensive and student-friendly. The complexities of phonetics, morphology, syntax, etc. are relayed in accessible language with clear examples. The layout is well organized with multiple ways of finding the information that one might need (for example, look a word up in the glossary and get the "file" number for a more thorough explanation; need to quickly reference a phonetic symbol -- merely flip open the back of the book). Highly recommended for introduction to linguistics.

As a piano teacher, I love the Snell series. If you want to learn the basics of music theory, then stick with the series and by the time you get through book ten, you will be able to pass first year college music theory no problem or test out of it.

This book is very helpful in understanding piano theory. It is well organized and my 8 yo was able to read and understand most of it on his own. It is very useful for CM test prep.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Mitzi VanCleve is a self-published author who began writing out of a deep desire to provide awareness, support and advocacy for those who share her experience of living with anxiety disorders. Mitzi was immensely relieved to find out that she had an actual disorder which could be managed, but still remained unaware that some of her longest and most excruciating seasons of distress were due to type of OCD called Purely Obsessional OCD. That answer didn’t come until, at the age of fifty, she went through yet another crushing season of anxiety due to severe obsessions about her faith in Christ. As Mitzi became educated about OCD and was able to obtain professional help, this resulted in a greater level of relief as she became more skilled at learning how to manage the OCD. Eventually, she began to communicate through online forums with other Christians who were afflicted with anxiety disorders and found that she was able to provide a great deal of comfort, encouragement and hope to those who were suffering in isolated silence. This is what led to her publishing her first book: “Strivings Within – The OCD Christian.” After publishing that book she felt a desire to reach out to teens because that’s when anxiety disorders will typically become much more distressing. Mitzi thought that the best way to do that would be in the form of an easy read/ fictional novel which portrayed what it’s like for a teen who is struggling with some of the things she went through at that age. This is how “In Your Dreams” was born. Mitzi resides in Michigan with her closest friend and supporter; her husband Dennis. They have been married for thirty-eight years and have three children and seven grandchildren.

WOW! I was stunned when I came across this book! I only wish I had come across it when I was in the midst of my deep depression and OCD experience. I have read other helpful advice on OCD for Christians, but this is by far the best book ever on the subject!! Even my Christian psychiatrist and Christian counselors that I had talked to didn't exactly understand what was going on with me.The Lord has just recently healed me of this Pure O terror that I experienced non-stop from the minute I woke up until going to sleep at night. I was in an extremely stressful time in my life and it morphed into thoughts that I doubted that I was truly saved. I began to think that I had to believe continuously that I was saved in order to hold onto my salvation. I struggled to truly believe that I was saved and doubted and wondered if I had been saved to begin with. I figured if I wasn't saved, I had to get saved, so I would ask the Lord Jesus into my heart and life to save me and then about 10 minutes later, would begin to doubt it. I would feel bad about doubting it and would ask Him to forgive me for doubting, then I would ask Him into my life again, thinking it was the last time I would do this, but then the doubts would start up again 10 minutes later. Then I would ask Him to forgive me for asking Him into my life so many times and not believing that He had come in, then on and on it went. I began to think I wasn't believing, and so therefore I was damned because I wasn't believing. The terror of these constant thoughts was hell itself! The constant fear I felt was torment. This went on for an entire year! I couldn't understand what was wrong with me and my family was very concerned. Eventually the Lord healed me, He gets all the glory. I started taking some natural supplements that healed my brain over time. Pure O OCD is definitely a physical issue, not a spiritual one,though I couldn't understand that at the time and kept blaming myself for the thinking.I came across Mitzi's book about a month ago, and it is as if she were writing of some of my own experiences!! She is a very gifted writer and was able to put down in words what many of us have experienced. She uses very helpful illustrations,she is very good at explaining what happens in our thoughts, and then explains how to handle them. God has truly given her insight and understanding into this disorder and she is able to encourage those who are in the midst of this suffering. She is an advocate for us and a wonderful encouragement!f I thank God for Mitzi!

I majored in Psychology, and I have to say that in all the years I read, from textbooks, about mental disorders, it would have meant a LOT to have a book to read that was a personal account of someone suffering from a mental disorder, but not just any mental disorder, actually, especially a book on OCD. Why? Because besides the fact that OCD-- a serious medical condition-- has been repeatedly made light of in our culture, OCD is a disorder that is so narrowly understood, and often completely misunderstood, as a disorder that is all about compulsions that are manifest 'outwardly', such as compulsive hand washing and disproportionate double-checking-- very difficult symptoms to manage, but certainly not the only kind. Incredibly, during the entire course of earning my degree, I never heard one instructor mention that there was more than one type of OCD, 'Pure-O', which is the primary type of OCD focused on in this book, and concerns compulsions that manifest mainly in one's mind. This book should absolutely be required reading for any student of psychology!But another reason why this book is so invaluable is its special focus not only on the physiological aspects of OCD that apply to everyone with the disorder but, particularly, for the encouragement it provides Christians. As wonderful as it is, overall, to be a Christian, Christians with OCD can easily find themselves vulnerable to the symptom of scrupulosity, or 'Religious OCD'. With the unfortunate persistence of stigma and ignorance that exists in the very heart of the Church, the pastor's study, even the sanctuary, the very places where a Christian should and normally does find helpful guidance can become a very painful place to go. Beyond being required reading for psychology students, this book should be required reading for seminary and Christian counseling students! The Church ought to be **leading** in advocacy for the mentally ill, not making things worse! Further, any Christian looking for a better understanding of mental disorders and, specifically, OCD, would find this book invaluable-- and whether the reader themselves has OCD or is a loved one of someone with the disorder.But one of the best things about this book is how the information is divided. With the first part of the book focusing on a personal account, it becomes clear to the reader that there is no question the author has had her own share of a very difficult personal journey with Pure-O OCD. Through specific examples of how the disorder affected her, especially from the time she first became symptomatic until she was diagnosed, it is clear that this is an account of someone who has been in the heart of the battle. She knows how you feel, sympathizes with your difficulties. But best of all, it doesn't stop there. After all, as meaningful as it is to be understood, real hope comes from knowing there is help. The book is full of quotes and scriptures that anyone with the disorder would find encouraging, Christian or non-Christian. And, although it is made clear, from the start, that this is not a book intended to give specific medical advice, the book makes reference to cited up-to-date medical information that the reader can discuss with his or her doctor.If anyone is looking for a book about OCD, especially 'Pure-O', written by someone who has been there, doesn't try to sugar-coat the challenges, and yet gives powerful, tangible assurance that the reader can not only 'survive' OCD but learn to thrive in the midst of still having OCD, this book is well worth the time and money spent reading it. This is a very good book. While my condition is not mainly focused on Christianity I do often have doubts about being worthy in the eyes of God. The author does a great job explaining how the afflictions of both panic and OCD work. Devout Christians will feel particularly at ease knowing that there is someone just like them experiencing them. However having said that Mitzi gives a very good account of the disorders themselves regardless of the particular theme. OCD in particular has many main themes including just the mental obsession type without the compulsion like hand washing etc. Its often referred as Pour O and this is the focus of the authors issue. Its not uncommon however for the theme to morph into another theme also. She gives a good overview of the decision by her and her doctors to use medication and the use of ERP therapy as well. She also adds some useful analogies that help her deal with the turmoil going on in her mind. Also she answers some questions from readers of her blog or this book about the condition. ( I have the Kindle version so im not sure if this is in the paperback. Personal accounts of OCD are rare so although there is a definite emphasis on religious OCD this is still a very accurate account of the condition. Lastly I have to mention the price. At the time of purchase the Kindle version was regularly priced $5.99. Its a bargain as the book is a full length publication. My understanding is that she is self published so im guessing she would have a say in the final price. So hats off for not charging the $10 or more that is typical of Kindle books.

So far everything is great about this textbook. Only down side is that the CD-ROM that came with it doesn't work. Apparently it's a common issue. Most of the other students in this course that have tried downloading it have the same issue. I would have liked to use it for studying. I did email the support address listed on the book and CD-ROM but I have not heard anything back from them. That was over 3 weeks ago and even resent the email thinking it may not have been received. No word yet.(Jan. 2015)UPDATES::: MARCH 2015After being in this book for about 8 weeks now. It has come to my and several others attention that this book and the CD-ROM has several errors and mistakes.I think it should be reviewed by the writers and publishers. Several of the study practices in the cd have wrong answers as correct and vice versa. Many of the study question at the end of each chapter have answers that are not in the book, or are also listing the correct answer as incorrect. This is very frustrating as a student we rely on the inform provided by the text and the instructors knowledge as well. It gives me absolutely no confidence in using this textbook as a study aid for the national exam. For right now I have to use it to finish up the course. I would advise students and schools to better review the choice of text being chose and quality of information

This book fit the course I took very well. The combination of the two and a lot of extra studying from this book helped me pass the NHA exam top of my class. But I will say there was way more information than you actually needed to know.

Relatively good book, explains pretty well. Has good diagrams and pictures.

Great price for used textbook. Only complaint is some answers are circled at the end of each chapter, which makes it hard to truly test yourself.

This was our required reading textbook for a community college phlebotomy class. It was a good guide for begginers, but if you'd want to become certified I'd reccomend getting supplemental material as well.

I found this textbook to be a real bonus for my phlebotomy class. It had plenty of illustrations that complememnted the text. I wound up getting an A in the class so I think the book is worth the money!
