Fun book. I gave my wife this instead of a valentines day card and it was a big hit. Lots of good short saying about love and a couple of bible verses. Who can say no to the wisdom of Pete the Cat when it comes to Groovy

Its just s bunch of sayings its a gimmick book and not a Pete the cat story. I went Pete happy and bought all of them at once and this was an utter disappointment

The book is fairly long for a small child. The pages are quotes or writings or song lines from famous people. The last page is a blessing. I really liked it, but my granddaughter doesn't know who the Beatles are or anyone else quoted... She got bored with the book before we got half way through it. Give it to a grownup that you love as a card.

Should've read reviews first...my for year old loves some of these books but this is less a kiss story and more random, short love quotes. I probably should have paid more attention...she loves the other Pete Valentine's book we got, with the cards and poster included with the story book.

I agree with other reviewers who commented that this is not a children's book. I would recommend this as a gift for adults who appreciate classic quotes and cats. It's light-hearted and cute. It's not for everyone, but for the right person this is a gem!

This book is adorable. It is all quotes from different people about the meaning of love. I got it for my daughter and she absolutely loves it. Perfect for Valentine's Day.

This was purchased for a barely 3 year old; but honestly it is an excellent book for teenagers and adults. It is a great book for mentors to provide to their mentees. I like all the celebrity quotes followed by "Pete's" definition of the quote. I'm sure I'll be buying more copies in the future for adults. Unexpected surprise!

I am a non-chemist that just spent a year going through this book as a self-study project. This book is a beast.Here is the bottom line: if you put in the work this book requires you will be rewarded with a deep understanding of chemistry and very good intuition of how chemistry works.I initially started this project with an Atkins text (don't know which one -- I have fewer squirrels in my neighborhood than he has versions of Physical Chemistry) and was getting nowhere. I found the organization, structure, and style of McQuarrie to be much more natural. I agree that the thermodynamics in McQuarrie is confusing and I supplemented that with Thermodynamics of Chemical Processes by Price. I also found the surface chemistry to be much too general (apparently not unexpected in PChem) and supplemented that with The Basis and Applications of Heterogeneous Catalysis by Bowker. Both are quick reads that will get you back on track with McQuarrie.

I am a chemistry major (I converted from chemical engineering halfway through my B.S.) and absolutely love this textbook. I took physical chemistry 2 (thermodynamics/kinetics) last semester and it was a really tough class. Even worse we were assigned the Engel/Reid textbook, which is total garbage.This textbook helped me survive (and at times enjoy) the class.The book is VERY logically organized. For the most part the math is very clear and easy to follow. They rarely skip steps, and take care to explain what is going on when deriving key equations. I never did any of the practice problems, but they look pretty good to me.This Fall I am taking physical chemistry I (quantum mechanics, yes I took them out of order haha), and the teacher is supposedly pretty awful. And we're using Engel/Reid again.... So I suspect this textbook will get a lot more usage from me!When I become a professor, and if this book is still in publication, this is definitely the textbook I'll assign. From my personal experience with it, and from what I have heard from others, this book is the best of the best.

I did a lot of reading from this textbook during my year of undergraduate physical chemistry and yes, I know physical chemistry can be frustrating, dry, and mathematically rigorous but i feel it is also immensely rewarding, even though I did not choose chemistry as my career. In my opinion, McQuarrie and Simon do an excellent job of incorporating the math with the chemistry. The book teaches the math right before the chemistry rather than assuming you learned it somewhere else. Also, the chapters and series of chapters are very self-contained, which meant there was no problem with the fact that my class did not follow the book's ordering of chapters. I really agreed with the choices the book made on how to teach thermodynamics and quantum. The book takes a statistical mechanics approach throughout, which I feel is easier than learning classical thermodynamics then introducing microstates/macrostates and stat. mech, even if the latter represents the the historical development of the topic. Personally, I believe quantum chemistry is the highlight of the book and is very well written. Similarly to thermodynamics, I agree with the differential equations approach to intro quantum mechanics rather than matrix algebra. Also, I really enjoyed the chapter-beginning bios highlighting a prominent physicist or chemist. To end my review, I feel the practice questions after each chapter are fairly involved, but appropriate to the difficulty level of an advanced undergrad class.

Some reviewers say that this does not have a chapter that is included in the US publication. My son used it for an engineering course at a top school, and had no problems. It saved him a lot of money. Maybe the missing material is in the second half of the book that the undergraduate class did not cover. I am not sure.

Classic text should be on every chemist's bookshelf. Presentation is clear, covers all areas, and best for the more physics approach, meaning really stron on QM, spectroscopy, and not as heavy on electrochem and thermo. It's thorough and can be a single go-to text because it is so complete.

Fifty years after taking Quantum mechanics in Physics, I wanted an up to date review of what has happened in my lifetime at a high technical level. Mathematically they do not go all the way into the method Froebenius to solve the various Sturm-Liouville equations, but then it is not a course in special functions, but rather their applications to P Chem. I found it especially fascinating that the molecular bonding is a purely quantum mechanical effect involving the exchange integrals of the wave functions. Good read with lots of material. Maybe I can at last understand group theory or at least what it's good for. Solid pedagogical approach, often showing how simplistic examples lead to a subtle understanding. Excellent book. I like the biographical sketches of the famous chemists. Every section title is a full sentence.

It was a very well written, mathematical treatment which was very comprehensive. I especially appreciated the reviews of mathematics before the Physical Chemistry topics were presented. This was especially helpful for me since it has been years since I had a two semester course on Physical Chemistry. This molecular approach helped me to put everything together. It was a better treatment of the subject than my previous experience with Physical Chemistry. I enjoyed this book.

The book is very heavy and thick. My instructor used it for Thermodynamics and Quantum. The book is ok but I recommend the solution manual and maybe a book with more practice problems.

I have been reading books about the church for almost thirty years now. Most of the best material is being churned out by Mark Dever and the boys at 9Marks. Tim Keller's, Center Church is a welcome guest in the growing list of books on ecclesiology.Keller sets out to communicate one central message which is summed up in the subtitle: Doing Balanced Gospel-Centered Ministry in the City. Center Church is encyclopedic in nature. It covers every subject conceivable and is a helpful tool in every pastors prospective tool chest.The discussion about gospel contextualization (chapter 7) is deeply encouraging and highly instructive. The author notes, "Contextualization is not - as is often argued - 'giving people what they want to hear.' Rather, it is giving people the Bible's answers, which they may not at all want to hear, to questions about life that people in their particular time and place are asking, in language and forms they can comprehend, and through appeals and arguments with force they can feel, even if they reject them.."Keller warns against the temptation to use contextualization as a clever means of compromise (which I find many pastors doing). He adds, "The call to contextualize the gospel has been - and still often is - used as a cover for religious syncretism. This means not adapting the gospel to a particular culture, but rather surrendering the gospel entirely and morphing Christianity into a different religion by overadapting it to an alien worldview."Center Church is filled with helpful instruction on doing gospel ministry in the city. It is a long read but worth plodding through for the treasures along the way.Highly recommended for pastors who love the gospel!

The ONLY reason that I would consider giving this book 4 stars is that it's so wordy. This seems to be one of the few books like this by Keller, but he wants to give a very detailed treatise on why every church should consider itself as being a part of cross-cultural missions already in their own city. He describes how to stay Gospel-centered in every ministry, and how to make sure that people know that they are ministers of the Gospel regardless of where they are. I love this book, and I recommend it to any pastor, elder, or deacon that wants to bring their church closer to bringing the Gospel well to their community.

​If you want a philosophy of ministry, I'm not your guy. I've written them. I've even assigned and graded them. I don't like most of them, though. Some are theological, but don't tell me much about ministry. Some are programmatic, and end up becoming too prescriptive. Neither is helpful.What we need, according to Tim Keller, is middleware. Middleware is like the operating system on your computer. It's neither the hardware (like theology), nor is it the application (the programs). In the church, this middleware -- a theological vision for ministry, really -- is more practical than doctrinal beliefs alone, but more theological than "how-to" steps for ministry. It is, it turns out, exactly what we need, and it's what Keller aims to deliver in his tome Center Church.Yes, it's a tome. The book is almost 400 pages, and the audiobook is almost 23 hours long. It's formatted like a textbook with lots of sidebars, and some tables and sidebars. As Mike Wittmer writes, "The only thing it's missing is a few pictures of U.S. Presidents, and I'd be back in high school."​ (The sidebars are one reason why the print version is superior to the audiobook or the ebook format. There's no real way for the sidebars to have the same flow on a Kindle, much less an audiobook.)​The book delivers exactly what you'd expect from Tim Keller: a scholarly but practical look at ministry. The book is broken into three sections: Gospel, City, and Movement.First, he begins with the gospel, helping us think carefully about what it is and what it isn't. He also describes how the gospel renews the church. Chapter 6, "The Work of Gospel Renewal," is worth the price of the book itself for any pastor who wants to see the church revived.Second, Keller writes on the city. Keller describes what it means to contextualize our ministries appropriately, and then gives us a basic understanding of urban theology. Keller is the best thing to happen to urban theology since Ray Bakke, who wrote The Urban Christian years ago. ​Keller makes a compelling case for the importance of ministry in the urban core, without devaluing the significance of ministry elsewhere. He then deals with the complex topic of the church's relationship to culture. Entire books have been written on this topic, but Keller bravely tackles it, providing a good synthesis of the various views. Keller reminds me of why I love cities, and why I'm glad to be pastoring in a city like Toronto.Finally, Keller ​writes on movement. The Church, he writes, is both an organism and an organization. It requires that we join God on mission, that we integrate a number of ministry fronts, and that we act as an organized organism.We need, he writes, more than sound doctrine, although sound doctrine is necessary. We need more than a magic-bullet program that will reach people. We need something in the middle: a theological vision that enables us to communicate the gospel to our time and place. "You can do this ministry with God's help," Keller writes, "so give it all you've got. You can't do this ministry without God's help -- so be at peace."​​I can't tell you how much I appreciated this book. It's meaty, but it re-energized me at many points. When Keller writes about church planting, for instance, he both inspired me and encouraged me, and made me want to sign up to be a church planter all over again. He has a knack for communicating complex information in a pastorally helpful way.This is one of those books that I'll be reading again. It's going to go on the shelf of books that are consulted often, because it covers so much material in a substantive, helpful way.​I did have a couple of mild criticisms. Keller likes finding the via media, the middle way. ​This is often helpful, but not always. Also, I also found that this book had a heavily edited feel. It ocassionally seemed to lack cohesiveness, which is perhaps understandable given all the ground it covers. Still, it seemed to be missing some of Keller's voice. I could be imagining this, but it felt that way.That being said, this book is gold. A few of Keller's articles have had a profound influence on my life. Imagine, then, almost 400 pages of such material. If you're in pastoral ministry, or if you are interested in a theological vision of the church, or any number of related topics such as church planting and cultural engagement, then this book is a must. ​Buy the print edition if you can, and refer to it often. You won't be sorry.

I liked that the book was theologically sound and thoughtful. Not that I agree with everything that was said, but at least the part where I disagree were thought through theologically. Keller is a veteran in applying biblical theology and biblical ecclesiology into an actual church setting that is part of a bigger picture of the Gospel movement in a major city of the world. As a pastor in Los Angeles, much of this consideration helped me to reflect on my city. One of my hangups is that it seems that the goal is to change the city for one's or a generation. Not that I don't want to do that, but it seems to be a bit of a smaller goal than what the Bible lays out.I recommend this book to all pastors and disciple makers who seek to make disciples through the local church for the good of the broader world.I gave it a five star rating because it challenged me, sharpened me theologically, helped me to think through how to apply the Bible's truth in the context of a church in the city, and because even though I disagree with some small points, it seems to be one of the better books to have a conversation in thinking through church leadership.

I like the book, though I found it a bit overlong and sometimes redundant. Further, I suspect that the author may have the cart before the horse in thinking that failure to study infinitesimals stultified Italy, rather than the other way round. Also, I sometimes found the going hard because the author failed to distinguish between an infinitesimal and an indivisible. Nevertheless, it was fascinating to learn that the Jesuits opposed the study of infinitesimals on theological grounds whereas in northern Europe – Protestant countries – the concept was generally accepted and led to development of calculus. I had no idea that Thomas (nasty, brutish, and short) Hobbes had so vigorously opposed the concept of infinitesimals, and perhaps more surprisingly I had never heard of John Wallis, who was sort of the hero of the book and vigorously defended the concept of infinitesimals in England (and invented the symbol for infinity). Indeed, unless Alexander is exaggerating, it appears that without Wallis, Newton would not have developed the calculus. Nevertheless, I find it very hard to believe that England prospered and Italy stagnated simply because England developed mathematics and Italy did not.

This book is much more than an esoteric history of an area of mathematics. It tracks the ancient rivalry between ‘rationalists’ and ‘empiricists’. The dominant rationalists have always believed that human minds (at least those possessed by educated intellectuals) are capable of understanding the world purely by thought alone. The empiricists acknowledge that reality is far too complicated for humans to just guess its detailed structures. This is not simply an esoteric philosophical distinction but the difference in fundamental world-views that have deeply influenced the evolution of western civilization. In fact, rationalist intellectuals have usually looked to the logical perfection of mathematics as a justification for the preservation of religion and hierarchical social structures. In particular, the rationalists have raised the timeless, unchanging mathematical knowledge, represented by Euclidean geometry, as not just the only valid form of symbolic knowledge but as the only valid model of the logic of “proof”.In particular, this book focuses on the battle between the reactionaries (e.g. Jesuits and Hobbes), who needed a model of timeless perfection to preserve their class-based religious and social privileges and reality-driven modernists, like Galileo and Bacon. The core of the disagreement was over the nature of the continuum, which was based on Euclid’s definition of a line as an infinite number of points. This intellectual argument implicitly links back to reality: is matter made of distinct atoms with empty space between them or are there no gaps between continuous matter? Although the model of the reactionaries was always Euclid's geometry, they never recognized they were only dealing with unreal definitions, as they faked out their arguments with appeals to 'real' lines etc. As such, they vigorously rejected the new concept of "indivisibles" (or "infinitesimals", the roots of calculus) and all ideas that were grounded in empirical studies of reality (like physics and the atomic hypothesis). Failure to admit debate about reality led Italy back into the Dark Ages while Northern Europe set off on the course of modernism.As other reviewers have noted, this book would have benefitted quite a bit by including the story of the rivalry between Leibniz and Newton, who are usually credited with the invention of the calculus. As this book shows, this 17th Century rivalry had much older roots. Indeed, the book could also have been improved by establishing this acrimonious debate back in Classical Greece, where the atomic model, first proposed by Democritus, was immediately seen as an atheistic proposal that threatened traditional religion. The modern reader might assume that science has now firmly voted for the atomic model but the extensive use of the calculus embedded in Quantum Physics has preserved the conceptual features of the continuum advocates, so that we are now faced with the paradox of waves and particles. None-the-less, even readers with minimal competence in mathematics will enjoy discovering how this tiny idea of the infinitely small punctured an ancient dream: that the world is a perfectly rational place that is governed by strict mathematical rules.

The author writes very interestingly about the religious and political positions with regard to---of all things!--the nature of the continuum that in 17th century Italy and England impeded the development of the calculus, and about the oddly-motivated positions taken by Gallileo and John Wallis that ultimately broke that barrier. But, though a portrait of Newton adorns the dust jacket, he has strangely little to say about the final chapter (Fermat, Newton, Leibniz) of his story, or about any of the other important mathematics that was gong on during the centuries in question. Promotes the view that mathematical developments are culturally determined, which is surely only part of the story.

The author has succeeded in writing a compelling account of how the work of brilliant 17th century mathematicians provoked conflicts of great cultural significance within the Catholic Church. He also explains with clarity how these conflicts had relevance to the reformation and the evolution of European political entities. The profiles of individual actors in mathematics and the Church are fascinating although it can be challenging to follow the large number of Italian names and places.The underlying mathematical theory of indivisibles, which was the cornerstone of the conflict, the forerunner of calculus and perhaps even atomic physics, is explained with enough clarity that most readers without a background in math will readily understand it. I enjoyed reading Infinitesimal as a brilliant history of religion, science and philosophy as they interacted 350 years ago, a glimpse of mathematical genius and a multifaceted biography of extraordinary people.

I sincerely loved the deep analysis of the conflict between Wallace and Hobbes. Even in the politics and culture wars in the US today, we can see this conflict between somewhat authoritarian, conservative factions and forward looking modern thinkers.

I am in my 40's, well past school and just interested in the social movements of the day. I often hear the term "Critical Theory" associated with the political ideologies of the left. I wanted to find out more about it, bought three books on the subject and this one was the only one that gave me that "Ah Ha" moment in understanding what Critical theory is. I went into this thinking Critical Theory was specifically a way of examining class relations and came out understanding Critical Theory is a way of looking at ALL subjects around us. To get a better understanding of class and race relations I now know which authors to look to and what the "sub-schools" of thought are to which I need to pay attention.

This is a good introduction to a train of thought that has transformed Western thought in the social sciences, while at the same time wreaking havoc by fostering a propensity for obfuscatory bloviation (I would us a harsher word, but don't want to risk getting censored). I earned a PhD in ethnomusicology five years ago, but was initially trained in the early 1970s before this trend became fashionable. I have found that it has become go-to jargon in my field and others, and has important merits. At the same time, it has become something of a fetish in academia, with scholars strutting about trying to demonstrate who is more socially conscious than whom. Nevertheless, academics must fortify themselves with this knowledge, if for no other reason but to make an articulate decision to forego using these ideas as the governing paradigm of one's work. To that end, this is a palatable way to ingest this set of idea. End of rant.

Reading this book is not going to make you an expert on Foucault or Lacan- however, if what you are seeking is an idea as to the spectrum of schools and branches and concerns of "critical theory," or if you're not even terribly sure what "critical theory" IS, then I suggest you pick this book up. When I was just getting started, it really helped me create a "cognitive map" of the field. Basically you get a mapped out schema of the world of critical theory, with a few tantalizing tidbits dropped about some of the thinkers- then it is up to you to go out and get the real books and start reading them. But if you are starting from nothing, and don't even know what you want to read- Donald Rumsfield's "Unknown Unknowns," then start reading this book so you can figure out what your "Known unknowns" are: "I don't know anything about Althusser, but judging on what I read in this book, I now know that I want to study him," etc. I have a few other of the "Introducing" books, and, honestly, the only one I came back to at all frequently was this one. It does not try to "explain" any particular thinker, but to introduce you to a field- I think in this regard I think it is sucessful. It is by no means perfect- for instance, Zizek only gets two teeny little pages- but, again, it is making various "names" available to you, various schools, various strands- Frankfurt school, Deconstruction, Structuralism, Post Marxist, Post Feminist, etc- so that you can go out and get started. I highly recommend this book. I think it is terrific. (Plus the illustrations are great fun!) Critical theory can be a confusing hodge podge of theoretical models- this book will help you on the path.

Worth the $5 paid both to clarify and elucidate any potholes in your philosophy education. This series is truly indispensable in today's world, not just for philosophy heads but for reaching out to the rest of society. The low price really is a part of that equation.

A great guide to critical theory

This book was fun to read. I liked how easily the author managed to reduce whole bodies of work into a sentence or two, which is precisely what I am looking for in these books. I agree with some of the other reviews here that he seems to dwell on Marxism and his influence, but I have always wondered why Marxism gets so much attention among "intellectuals" and this book helps to explain this phenomenon. While I doubt that this book sums up Critical Theory in its entirety, or even comes close, it definitely inspires further readings into the subject (at least it does for me), which is more than I can say for most books. I look forward to reading it again.

I like that this text is broad rather than deep. This is a fine starting point to choose a particular sub-area of critical theory and head down that rabbit hole.

This book is a tidy, small introduction that might help beginning literature students understand basic concepts. The book is not very well-organized, but nevertheless appeals to students because of the style in which it is written.
