This is an absolutely fabulous resource for therapists - particularly those who use mindfulness and/or are familiar with the Dao. I am a Daoist and therapist. Oddly it never occurred to me to put the two together in this way. It's completely masterful to make it intentional this way.The writing it pithy, easy to understand, and effective. You don't have to study it to understand it. Anyone can pick it up and get started right now. The segments are short and pack a punch. I highly recommend it.
I bought this book to learn about Hakomi but it turned out to be something very different and more profound. The words to describe it are respectful, gentle and insightful. The authors are very careful to respect the reader's understanding of their unique world and not to suggest that one ought to change. Let changes emerge if they arise during reflection on one's emotional experiences. The gentleness of the methods described are their hallmark. No urging only suggesting. Life moves at its own pace and we can learn a lot by floating in life's flow rather than swimming againts it, trying to get somewhere. Finally, the authors tie together mind, body and spirit like few books I have read. They describe a seamless whole rather than different parts, using simle life challenges to illustrate the path of growth. I highly recommen this small book!
This book was loaned to me years ago -- I was intrigued, never actually plunged into it, and eventually returned it. Then I ultimately purchased it, but again put it aside for another day. Now apparently was THE time. Since I could no longer find my copy, I purchased it again.Even if it took the 3rd exposure and some seeking after a lost book, I am glad I finally plunged in. Have some regrets I didn't follow through earlier, but then again ... perhaps my worlds are more appropriately aligned now to receive its wisdom. The book selects passages from the Tao-te ching as translated by a few different authors, frequently Stephen Mitchell. I found these highly relevant -- provoking thought, meditation, connection and feeling to the chapters for which they were chosen. I am not a psychotherapist. However, with some respectful modifications it was easy to see how the depths of these principles regarding nondoing and nonviolence can be helpful at many levels in our world and community ... especially in the setting of other healing relationships. There is not only a lot of grace in this book, if one engages with it, that grace continues to beautifully unfold throughout and beyond its pages -- hopefully into the lives of its readers and all the persons with whom they communicate. I'm eager now to see more about how grace can unfold in and through me.
I didn’t connect with this book very well. It’s just not for me. I’m sure someone else would find it helpful.
One of my favorite books I had to read for grad school. Loved the chapter about the river flowing into the lake... no matter what directions or obsticles come in the rivers way, it ends up in the lake. Believing that only one direction is the "right" direction means that every other choice is wrong. Dig it.
In a world of faith-based counseling there doesn't seem to be a whole lot for those of us who may live the principles of Tao. This book, front to back, helped me realize that I too, have a path available in faith and professionally. The principles and theory shared here in these pages can assist all therapists from the highly experienced to those like myself, and just beginning to bloom. I recommend this book to anybody in the helping fields.
I was hoping to do my book report for my diplomacy on this book....it melted my heart on so many levels, just oozing with compassionate understanding for both the client sitting in the client chair and the client sitting in the Therapist chair ;) I highly recommend this book if you are working with people or will be working with people in ANY position.
Johansson and Kurtz offer a beautiful example of how we can all apply the teachings of Tai-te ching to our lives and to our interactions with the people in our world.
