A good book for understanding the history and design implementations of Network drivers and their interfaces in the past. These echo into the present implementations of drivers in current operating systems like OSX, Windows and Linux. There is a reason things are the way they are today, and this explains a lot of that.Table of Contents ("paraphrased")Chapter 1 Networking BasicsOSI model of network communications(layer 1) Physical to Network components(layer 2) Data Link to Physical communications(layer 3) Host Operating Systems to Data Link communications(layer 3) - tcp/ip(layer 3) - netbios(layer 3) - ipx/spxChapter 2 MAC Layers(layer 2) IEEE 802 Data Link Layer (DLL)(layer 2.1) Logical Link Control (LLC)(layer 2.2) Media Access Control (MAC)(layer 2.2) - alternative MAC choices(layer 2.2) IEEE 802.3 Ethernet(layer 2.2) Architecture(layer 2.2) Frame Format(layer 2.2) Physical Layers(layer 2.2) IEEE 802.4 Token Bus(layer 2.2) Architecture(layer 2.2) Frame Format(layer 2.2) Physical Layers(layer 2.2) IEEE 802.5 Token Ring(layer 2.2) Architecture(layer 2.2) Frame Format(layer 2.2) Physical Layers(layer 2.2) ANSI X3T9.5 FDDI(layer 2.2) Architecture(layer 2.2) Frame Format(layer 2.2) Physical LayersChapter 3 Host Operating Systems - Device Driver Implementations-Microsoft DOS-IBM OS/2-Microsoft Windows/NT-Novell Netware-AT&T UNIXChapter 4 Microsoft NDIS2 (DOS & OS/2 drivers)-16 Bit-MAC (L2.2) to Protocol drivers (L3 & L4)-Language Implementation (Assembler)Chapter 5 Microsoft NDIS3 (NT drivers)-32 Bit-MAC (L2.2) to Protocol drivers (L3 & L4)-Language Implementation (C)Chapter 6 FTP Software PKTDRV (DOS drivers)-16 Bit-MAC (L2.2) to Protocol drivers (L3 & L4)-Language Implementation (C)Chapter 7 Novell ODI (Netware drivers)Chapter 8 AT&T DLPI (UNIX drivers) (Data Link Programming Interface - DLPI)Appendix A - PCnet-ISA based Ethernet Card designAppendix B - Remote Program Load (RPL) diskless workstationsAppendix C - DLPI.H file for UNIX DLPI driversExtremely detailed descriptions of each topic, but no code examples (which in this context is not a bad thing). Tackles an almost insurmountable series of topics.Attempts to explain how the Open System Interconnection (OSI) model for network communications between hosts is actually implemented in popular micro and mini computers of the 80s, 90s and 00's on popular network connected operating systems of the day.Has a chapter on FTP Software's - Packet Driver Interface - which single handedly introduced the majority of the human race to the Internet in 1992. It could be the only book to ever do that. The PKTDRV interface enabled many an IBM PC of the era to load a version of TCP/IP and thence SLIP, CSLIP, FTP, Gopher, HTTP clients and later Trumpet Winsock to enable the first NCSA Browsers like Mosaic to bring Hyperlinked text and visuals to the world.Covers not only Microsoft, but IBM, Netware and AT&T operating systems.A Rosetta Stone for the ages.
The previous reviews are too hard. The book provides a good introduction to network device drivers for those people who no nothing about the subject. While it does talk about NDIS 2 and NDIS 3, it provides good background information about the NDIS model and its development. While it does talk about older networking implementations on DOS, OS/2, and UNIX for example, it does demonstrate how the OSI model is implemented in these different environments. This is the books strength, not its weakness. One thing that I think is ridiculous is the price: [$$$] is too .... [$$$] is more like it. Buy a used copy if you want to understand the basic networking models of the aforementionedsystems.
