Well dang, PERL has changed a lot since I bought the older version of Learn Perl. Has it been really ten years, where does the time go. Enough changes have been made that I had to learn PERL again. Great book.

Easy to follow for someone looking to teach themselves Perl. It is written in a way where you can go as slow or as fast as you want. I'll likely be buying the second book in this series and will review that one at a later date. If it's written anything like this one then mastering Perl should be in my future!

If you want to learn Perl, there are two books you should buy. One is Programming Perl (it needs to come with a trip to the chiropractor) and this book, Learning Perl. In my opinion, both are required reading. Perl is an amazing language that can do wonders for your work load and your career. I started learning Perl (pun intended) when the manager next to me kept hinting that I should learn Perl to go along with the Excel Macro programs I was writing (automation, FTW! yo!). He's right and I may just earn a promotion due and join his team due it! Even if you are not out for a new job or promotion, automating mundane tasks is key in the server admin and tech fields I believe. Learning a robust and flexible scripting language like Perl is key. Even if you decide not to continue with Perl and choose bash, (G)AWK, Python, whatever, knowledge of Perl can only be an advantage, face it, some day if you deal with enough scripts you will run up against a Perl script that someone else wrote that you will need to maintain and this is your key to the kingdom.

Entertaining book when lerning the language. Used for my computational chemistry course to run molecular dynamics programs and to extract and compile data. This book did a good job at keeping the tone conversational, including sarcastic comments to keep the reading not monotone.

I bought this book and read through it for work. It really prepared me for the new project.

Good book for *modern* perl

a good book

This book was an excellent book for me to learn enough to create the perl scripts I needed. I did not use for deep elaborate programming.
