As with all his other books, Fr. Cessario's short history of Thomism is a worthy read. He accomplished what he set out to do, namely, to provide a short history of what I think is one of the most significant intellectual/philosophical/theological endeavors that the Catholic Church has ever produced and promoted. To do so is to face an overwhelmingly daunting task as it is like trying to shove the sands of a beach into a child's beach pail. It simply cannot be done.Fortunately, he did not ask me for my advice. Instead, he produced a little work that is bound to whet the appetite of any peeping Thomist (to borrow from McInerny's title of another excellent little book on Thomism). However, this is both a blessing and a curse. In its three sections, it blesses you by giving you some basic notions about what Thomism is, its customary divisions in its history, a brief overview of notable Thomists throughout its history and the author's optimistic conclusion. Nevertheless, it curses you because its definition of Thomism, its divisions, and history are all too brief. The reader must look elsewhere for more satisfying definitions and descriptions. Furthermore, it would do him well if Fr. Cessario's would write more lucidly. I may be a dunce, but sometimes I think I understand St. Thomas more than I do Thomists. Fr. Cessario should take his cue from fellow Thomists such as Matthew Levering and Gilles Emery, O.P, who are much more readable than he is. Nonetheless, this book is worth reading and I recommend it to anyone who is interested in studying the thought of St. Thomas Aquinas and understanding its history. It was a pleasure to come to some understanding of how Thomism has influenced the Church throughout the centuries, no matter how brief. Even more pleasing was how Fr. Cessario concluded the book:"The supreme blessing that first drew the attention of Aquinas is the mystery before which he knelt each day, the blessed gift of the hidden Godhead, which under the figures of bread and wine held Aquinas captive to his Lord, and which today continues to sustain those Thomists who want to enter into his thought with the most perfect assurance."The love of our Eucharistic Lord sustained Aquinas in his endeavor to love him with all his mind as well as his heart. On this point, let us all take our cue and make the best of our personal, short history.

This little book is not really an introduction to Thomism. Instead, it is an extremely brief glance at the history of Thomism. It is divided into three parts: I. Thomism II. the Thomists III. After the French Revolution. There is also a handy index. I summarize as follows:Summary of part one (about 40 pages):An extremely brief biography of St. Thomas is given (less than 10 pages). Then, he goes on to say what distinguishes Thomism from other systems in around 16 pages. He also briefly touches on divisions in Thomism. Following this, the author explains the various ideas behind dividing Thomism into various periods. Finally, he explains his method.Summary of part two (roughly 40 pages):This part lists important Thomists from St. Thomas to the period of the French revolution. While not a laundry list, the information is still very general.Summary of part three (10 pages):This section covers SOME of the Thomists following the French revolution. He does leaves out some very important 20th century Thomists like Latourelle,Tonquedec, Lallemant, and de Koninck (incidentally, several of these thinkers were against the Gilsonian brand of Thomism). A certain amount of defense of the second Vatican council's theologians is also undertaken. Conclusion and index:The conclusion is about 7 pages and simply discusses the current fortunes of Thomism (without dropping names) and the outlook of the philosophical system. Following this is the index, which is extensive and very helpful. My rating: while I thought the book could be better, it is a welcome volume and is handy for finding out "who, where, and when". His division of the various types of Thomism is useful, but could be less biased and more critical. More attention should have been given to some of the departures of neo-Thomism as well as Garrigou-Lagrange's place in post-French Revolution Thomism. Nevertheless, it fills a vacuum of sorts, is succinct and useful.NOTE: for those looking for introductions to Thomism, there are many. Jacques Maritain's little book on Saint Thomas is one but, for the more ambitious, Garrigou-Lagrange's "Reality: a Synthesis of Thomistic Thought" is considerably more enlightening (it does require some philosophical background, however). It's also back in print by ex fontibus, yet not listed by Amazon as being so. Hence, one must order from the publisher.

It is really great!A very important introduction to Aquinas's thought!Best,Paulo Faitanin
