About the Author

Donald L. Pavia earned his BS degree in chemistry from Reed College and his PhD in organic chemistry from Yale University. In 1970, he joined the faculty at Western Washington University as Assistant Professor and now holds the rank of Professor Emeritus. He is the coauthor of two organic laboratory books that include techniques and experiments: INTRODUCTION TO ORGANIC LABORATORY TECHNIQUES: A MICROSCALE APPROACH (Cengage Learning), and A SMALL SCALE APPROACH TO ORGANIC LABORATORY TECHNIQUES (Cengage Learning), as well as MICROSCALE AND MACROSCALE TECHNIQUES IN THE ORGANIC LABORATORY (Cengage Learning), which highlights techniques to be used with a faculty member's own experiments. He is a co-author, with Gary M. Lampman, George S. Kriz and James R. Vyvyan of an organic spectroscopy book, INTRODUCTION TO SPECTROSCOPY (Cengage Learning). Professor Pavia's research interests center on the synthesis and reactions of valence tautomeric and photochromic compounds, especially pyrylium-3-oxide tautomers. Autoxidations are a special interest. His other interests include the use of computers in teaching organic chemistry, both for lecture presentation and for the simulation of laboratories. He is the author of several computer programs. One such program is SQUALOR (Simulated Qualitative Organic Analysis) for which he won the 1986 EDUCOM/NCRIPTAL award. The program is designed for teaching the methods for solving organic unknowns.

Probably one of the few textbooks that I can say is truly worth the investment. The explanations for the different types of spectroscopy are clear and examples given are very helpful in the determination of MS, IR, NMR, and UV spectra. A definite keeper. I kind of wish a hard copy of the book existed for increased durability. That reminds me, I need to get this back from a friend who also wished the book was cheaper so he would have his own copy. Instead he had to borrow mine

I've used this book for IR, 1HNMR and 13CNMR. Just make sure to answer all the problems and the answer key for the unsolved ones can be found in Chegg study.I didn't like how this book approach Mass spectrometry; I found more in the instrumental side and I needed fragmantion explanation so I used Silverstein for the MS portion. Bottom line, highly recommend for organic structure determination course.

This book is probably the best introductory reference on spectroscopy currently available, and I've checked out pretty much every book on the market right now. I'm a chemist, and this book got me through my senior synthesis and spectroscopy lab. Proton and carbon-13 NMR, IR, GC/MS, and UV/Vis are all covered in the book. It includes many handy tables of characteristic shifts for NMR, characteristic absorbances for IR and UV/Vis, and a nifty table on common GC/MS fragments by m/e. The chapter on 2D NMR is lousy, but that's not really introductory material anyhow. The UV/Vis chapter is kind of cursory, but UV/Vis isn't all that useful. This is a book that I intend to hang on to for a while.

A great book for anyone who has dabbled in spectroscopy and would like to learn. Extremely useful for identifying NMR peaks caused by heteroatoms. The older editions are just as good as the new one and for a better price. I had one copy stolen during the semester. I didn't blink an eye at buying a new copy.

This is the most important book anybody who has any associate with spectroscopy will ever buy. It has beautiful spectroscopy tables in the back so that you know exactly what comes at that frequency, the text is terrific, and they have examples in the back to help solidify the knowledge. If you're taking spectroscopy or just need a lab IR, NMR, MS reference, buy it. If you hate books and want to fail, shoot for another text.

I thought that this book was actually really expensive for being a paperback but now I realize that the value is not in the construction of the book but the construction of the material inside. This book takes a rather difficult and intense subject matter and breaks it down into an easy and digestible concept. I would recommend this book to any aspiring chemist.

Very helpful & great for learning the different spectroscopic techniques that are most frequently used by chemists. Lots of spectra & problems to test your knowledge & gauge where you are.

This came quickly and in good condition. However, it would be nice if science books were cheaper. This is in color, which is nice but adds to the cost of printing (and ultimately your price). Being a science major is expensive when you have to buy books each semester. This was better priced than in my college bookstore, but still a lot. The book itself was written well, and helped with the class (analytical chemistry).
