What I really wanted was a book about the paths in the Berkeley Hills that operate as shortcuts as they get you from one steep street to the next. The walks described here are fairly standard and obvious. If you're new to the area, this is probably a great book to start with.One thing I really appreciate about the book is that it includes an explanation of Berkeley architecture which I've never appreciated as much as I should have. The city has an amazing array of wonderful houses, and perhaps the best thing about them is they almost never get torn down. In many cities with high priced houses, you buy the land and not the house. In Berkeley, you still buy the house. That keeps the city from turning into a bland, common looking, prosperous metropolis. Berkeley still looks like Berkeley, and that's invaluable from my perspective.
My family used Berkeley Walks while visiting Berkeley last month. We found the details about the history, homes, home owners and parks fascinating. Tthe book is well-organized and all is related in a very folksy manner - with interesting, sometimes juicy, details.
Every thing I would expect from Berkeley.
